Last week was a good week. Finally. Lots of reasons and none of which matter to anyone but me. I mention it because it was an anomaly as of late and demanded mentioning. And, I’m all out of witty one liners—even though last week was full of crappy but funny movie quotes—so you got that for an opening statement. Yay you. Anyway, new week means new releases and we got a ton of them to get to and from all corners of the vast metal and metalish landscape. Looking for some incredible sludge that bites back? Black Sheep Wall has your back. How about some shamanic doom? Sunnata saves the day. Or maybe some filthy doom/sludge is calling? 16 and Grime do it and do it well on a split so you’re covered there. Or maybe some exceptionally low end driven, crazy, avant-metal fits the bill? You guessed it, Timo Ellis is looking out for you—just sayin’, I’ll die on the hill of Timo Ellis and Netherlands so there’s that to entice you. CANTO: Heavy Temple, Blindfolded and Led to the Woods, The Hate Club, and More

Not gonna lie, I have totally lost track of what day it is. October?

  • Let’s kick things off with some news out of the Heavy Temple camp, a band I haven’t mentioned in quite some time. The psychedelic doomers have signed on to a deal with Magnetic Eye Records, as they prepare for a new full-length release later this year.
  • Blindfolded and Led to the Woods are releasing their third full-length, Nightmare Withdrawals, on March 26th through Landmine Records. Pre-order it through Bandcamp (duh), and check out “Atop the Wings of a Magpie” while you’re over there.
  • Timo Ellis, the frontman from Netherlands, is releasing a solo EP titled Death Is Everywhere in late February. Give this quick teaser a watch and keep an eye out for more info regarding pre-orders and all that in the days to come.
  • Industrial project known as The Hate Club dropped a new animated video a few days ago. Check out “My Name Is Legion” immediately below.

Current events have been a bitch for artists the world over but for Brooklyn rockers, Netherlands, it’s afforded the opportunity to double down on creating music. Last week the band released their fifth full length Zombie Techno via frontman Timo Ellis‘s Records and Tapes Records imprint and it’s another in a long line that’s incredibly hard to pin down but for those of you living under a rock and completely unaware, their sound is somewhere between sludge, pop, avantmetal, and heavy as heck with amazing vocals. It’s catchy, entertaining, unique and carries a powerful message. So, yeah…if you like Netherlands, it’s time to get excited and if you don’t know, it’s time to get acquainted.

If you’ve been following my ramblings here long enough, it’s a given that New York’s Netherlands are miles away from the norm which consequently makes them a shoe in for favorite status in my book. August 24 marks the release date of Netherland’s fifth effort, Black Gaia, on frontman Timo Ellis’ imprint Records and Tapes Records. It’s an album that pulls in all their legendary psychedelic freak outs, melodic poppy hooks, bottom heavy bombast and the knack for ridiculously catchy songwriting into a MOUNTAIN of a successful album.
