Behemoth

July 10, 2017

Good morning, it’s time to metal. Yes, this thing still exists. Here’s some metal stuff you might have missed from…recently:

    • As per usual, a whole bunch of bands dropped new music over the weekend, including SkyeaterHeresiarch and more. Check out Josh’s recap for the full list.
    • Behemoth drummer Inferno is going to be sitting out the band’s upcoming tour with Slayer to go do dad stuff. Understandable. Congrats to him. Filling in will be Jon Rice, formerly of Job for a Cowboy. I’m okay with this because of the formerly in that sentence.

In the Flesh: Ash Borer, Volahn, and Shataan (January 23, 2017)

The Black Twilight Circle is a name that many familiar with underground black metal hold in high regard, and for good reason. Both the sheer amount of releases and the quality of these releases from the insular Los Angeles based acts brings acclaim from around the world, and to be able to live close enough to catch these various acts often is one of the best things about living in Southern California for me. So when I found out that two of the Circle’s best acts were opening for Ash Borer, an all time favorite of mine, there was no way I could miss out on that experience. Hosted once again at the Complex in Glendale, CA, this night would hold three memorable performances from some of the best black metal bands around.

Drinking With Satan: AlNamrood – “Diaji Al Joor”

drinking with satan

What the hell does that say? I have no idea. We’ll deal with it later. But first, I need to open up about something. Which is something I rarely do. I’ve been under heavy fire the last month or two from everyone (that lives in my head) because of my depressing decrease in alcohol consumption. Yes, it’s true. I don’t like not drinking and I feel like everyone (that lives in my head) respects me less. My maybe me friends, family, and liver appreciate it, but I don’t have to deal with them around the clock. Ok fine, maybe I do, but I don’t care what they think. So it’s cool! I suppose I can always console with this guy, but that will only take me so far. No matter! I have followed the signs and am ready to go for another episode of Drinking With Satan. I could never let you cretins down. So let us begin. Continue reading

Album Review: Daemon Pyre – “Daemon Pyre”

488083

I went into this week excited about the abundance of new black metal I had to look forward to. While things started off well enough with Volahn’s Aq’ab’al, the highlight was supposed to be Dodsfall‘s Kaosmakt. But of course, the metal gods gifted me my favorite thing… disappointment, as that album is nowhere to be found—on Spotify, on Bandcamp, you name it. Alas, I was left scrambling for something to listen to while trying to suppress the bitter taste in my mouth. But then, with an RKO out of nowhere, Daemon Pyre showed up on my radar screen with an absolutely relentless self-titled debut album that immediately projects them into the top handful of albums I’ve listened to in this still-new year.
