CANTO: The Ocean, Enslaved, Vous Autres, and More

Kicking myself for not carving out time to get this in yesterday’s schedule. Alas.

  • OF COURSE we’re going to open with the latest track and video from The Ocean. This one is for “Oligocene”, which serves as a transition between the Mesozoic and Cenozoic segments of the record.  Phanerozoic II is out on September 25th through Metal Blade.
  • Anybody check out the stream of Enslaved‘s “Below The Lights” performance, a collaboration with the Beyond The Gates Festival? Here’s the link if you need it. Utgard is out on October 2nd through Nuclear Blast.
  • In this latest trailer for the 20th anniversary of ClaymanAnders and Björn get into the evolution of the band since that album was released. I’m actually curious to hear from these two on this subject. That drops on August 28th, also through Nuclear Blast.
  • Post black metal sounds like a good way to transition into Friday, so here’s a new visualizer from Vous Autres for “Onde”. Sel de Pierre is out on September 25th through Season of Mist.

Best of 2019: Zyklonius’ List

Best of 2019

By now, it has become customary for me to recall at the turn of the year how great the past 12 months were for metal and its myriad sub-genres and styles, and how difficult it has become to keep one’s head above the water in the face of the deluge of releases. I have been listening to metal for over 25 years but am still astonished and impressed on a daily basis by the boundless imagination on display, be it the ever-blossoming creativity of bands who have been operating for 20 years or the ravenous appetite of newcomers.  Continue reading

Initial Descent: April 7 – 13, 2019

Inter Arma
Inter Arma

I was in a bus full of 50 screaming kids over the weekend so EXCUUUSE me for blasting all this week’s metal and downing all the cabinet bourbon. What’s up this week? Plenty, so read on good readers…

First up is Inter Arma who have seemingly found that elusive door to hell on Sulphur English. Seriously, between the nihilistic doom and devilish chants you’d think ol’ Beezlebub himself might have tracked this thing straight from his lair. Next up is black metal juggernauts Waldgeflüster who get weirdly chanty and folky on Mondscheinsonaten but it really is another outstanding notch in the belt of a band that has made their name residing outside the normal lines of black metal. Moving right along, NJ’s Hath capitalizes on the promise of their last EP with the insane death metal full length Champ du Sang, expect these guys to be large and in charge based on this. And, rounding out the top slots is Vous Autres who saw some action in a recent feature of ours (link contained below) but now offer Champ du Sang on physical format so there’s no excuse not to pick up this beast of blackened sludge, trust me (and Zyklonius) here: it rules and hard.

Get in there and get some. Plenty of good stuff this week so no excuses. Continue reading
