Best of 2022: Josh’s List

Best of 2022

I had this enormous amount of words set to open this thing but opted for… not that. We’ve all lived through another year so there’s no need to reiterate. Instead, I’ll say that 2022 was great for me. It’ll be one of those years I’ll look back on as one that changed things for the better and I’ll have extremely fond memories of it for reasons I can’t mention here. But, I’ll also look back on it as a tremendous year for metal. And it doesn’t matter what strain you dig as pretty much all of it had a banner year. I know it seems like we’re a broken record saying that every year, but 2022 was damn strong. If you don’t feel the same, please rewind and revisit and get back to me. Otherwise, welcome to all the things that made a huge difference for me throughout the year and what was my 2022 soundtrack, what made the biggest impact…whatever, you get the idea. This list of 18…, wait…you ask “why 18?” Well, branding of course. We’re Nine Circles so you’ll get my top 9 and my 9 honorable mentions… and a few special mentions. 9C, as it was. So, let’s do it…

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 238 (7.2.2022)

In the United States a lot of folks are celebrating Independence Day, which falls on July 4th. Myself, I’m celebrating a Monday off and an extended weekend in the woods with my family as I contemplate life, the universe, and everything, to crib from a certain Douglas Adams.

Oh, and I’m kicking off this 238th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist with an awesome band I just discovered: Kryptograf. They deal in some crazy psychedelic stoner doom rock straight out of Birmingham 1970 if you catch my drift. Great stuff. I may have also thrown in some vintage Darkthrone because I just got my limited edition white vinyl of A Blaze in the Northern Sky. Elsewhere Anton is repping Pelagic Records hard with tracks from Psychonaut and Hiroe, as well as a new cut from Conan. Vincent brings the madness with new music from Alexisonfire, Pianos Become the Teeth, Gaerea, and another cut from the fantastic new release by Inexorum. Finally Josh is going to wrap it up today with a host of great extreme music, including cuts from Werewolves, Spirit Adrift, Peelingflesh, Mongrel, and the newest single from Bloodbath that is so damn good I bumped it to the top of the playlist.

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.

By the time this publishes, I’ll be photographing my second show of the year. Which is wild.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 226 (4.09.2022)

playlist - mixtape

Dear Diary,

Today I was this many years old when I found out Hällas released a new album, so we’re kicking off the 226th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist with a track from the incredible Isle of Wisdom, followed by some righteous early 70s proto-metal I’ve been playing nonstop the past few days.

Lest you think it’s nothing but underground and garage rock from before you were born, the loyal 9C staff have you covered with the more extreme stuff. Aton kicks us off with some new Werewolves, Autarkh III, and Enphin. Josh and I have been gushing over the latest from Wo Fat, so here’s a dose of what to expect when their new album explodes, as well as tracks from Demonical, Tenebro, Lord Belial, Hurakan, and a Motörhead classic. Vincent goes for the outer reaches with some Cremation Lily, The Callous Daoboys, Egregore, and a killer live cut from site favorite Kowloon Walled City. Buke goes decidedly old school with Manowar, Demilich, Sepultura, Darkthrone, and MSG. Finally Angela brings the proceedings to a close with the new single from Astronoid and tracks from Vattnet and Soft Kill, followed by a KILLER old cut from Thou. Really…we should have more Thou in our lives.

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.
