Nine Circles ov…Random VNYL Metal Records

It started about two years ago, and I have our Fearless Editor Josh to blame.  For Christmas I received a flat, square cardboard box containing a creamy white edition of the self titled album from Succumb.  I didn’t have a turntable…yet.

Two years later and I have a hefty collection spanning a plethora of genres, largely thanks my inability to stop my subscription to VNYL, a curated record subscription service.  Every month I get three albums created to my tastes based on my listening history on Spotify as well as my Discogs collection.  It can be hit or miss, particularly with their metal selections, but every time I start to pick up the phone to cancel another batch comes in with a surprise that makes me think, “Damn…maybe I should hold off another month.”   So for this edition of Nine Circles ov…let’s dive into nine curated metal selections sent to me and see if they’re truly reflective of my listening tastes.

As always, let’s do this. Continue reading

Best of 2017: Mark’s List

It was an honor joining the Nice Circles team this year. I started a series of posts called A Headbanger’s Journey that I hope to continue into 2018.  Late to the party,  I bought an absurd amount of music at the end of the year, much of it from the excellent Nine Circles coverage and I’m just now coming up for breath. In 2016 I went back in time to investigate the early death metal classics of the late 80’s/early 90’s and this year, I did the same with classic punk and hardcore. Both of those genres inform my current listening and are reflected in this list. So, let’s see where the rubber hits the road.   Continue reading

All Pigs Must Die

Last one of these before Halloween. So, who are you parading around town as? I’m going as myself, straight from work. Should be fun. Get your horror movies on this weekend people, seriously. I tip my hat to all of you that I see on social media getting it done — handful of nights left to go, DO NOT let us down. Anyway, lots of metal here on Initial Descent this week: All Pigs Must Die place a nasty drillbit made of hardcore squarely in the temple on Hostage AnimalBlut Aus Nord slice the rib cage wide open with a machete of black metal on Deus Salutis MeaeDeathCrawl peels the skin back painfully slow with sludgy fingertips on Acceptable Level of Misery and Mendacium severs limbs then uses them to beat the blackened dead to a pulp on Decimating Titans. Sounds fun right? Of course it does. But that’s not all, we have much more fun lying in wait. Head inside and see for yourself — you never know what might be lurking around the corner… Continue reading

Album Review: All Pigs Must Die – “Hostage Animal”

all pigs must die hostage animal cover

While black, death, and doom metal may be my forte (and what I spend the most time with), there is something about a grimy, fisticuff-inducing hardcore album that scratches a certain itch for me.  Maybe it’s all the metalcore I cut my teeth on in high school, but it just feels like a good time.  It’s nice to find bands now that take elements of hardcore and bring it to a level of darkness that matches the rest of the music I listen to, and one such act that is a go-to of mine is All Pigs Must Die.  Their brand of dark, visceral hardcore consistently delivers the goods, and nowhere more so than on their new album, Hostage Animal.
