The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 93 (8.24.2019)

playlist - mixtape

I may have been behind in my playlist duties last week but I’m coming back with a vengeance today.  Thanks to Josh, as ever, for having my back when life causes things to slip through the cracks.  As usual, today brings another opportunity for us here at 9C to grace your ears with our sublime and spotless taste in songs.  This week, my own playlist picks run the gamut from folk to classic Coheed and Cambria to death metal, we’ve got new jams from Coffins and Blanck Mass, and Chris throws some Joe Satriani in there for good measure.  Drop out of life with coffee in hand and get your weekend started right.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 90 (8.3.2019)

playlist - mixtape

Everything is a madhouse right now.  Which is maybe part of the reason I straight up forgot to write up this post last week.  Thanks to Josh for covering me.  But I’m back, and ready to share more of the good stuff we’ve been listening to on another glorious Saturday morning.  We’ve got new tunes from Hope Drone, Coffins, White Ward, The Great Old Ones, Russian Circles, as well as a smattering of some of the best songs from other releases from this year and beyond.  There’s even a few electro-pop songs thrown in there by a certain band that I personally feel got a raw treatment from the 2edgy4u hardcore crowd this week.  Just my opinion though.

There’s plenty in here for every taste, so grab a seat and your headphones and let’s get down to business.

Album Review: Unnatural – “The Path to Ruin” (EP)

frontcoverBorn out of former members of Morgue and Temporal Bleed, Chicago-based death metal outfit Unnatural will soon be dropping their debut EP The Path to Ruin through Horror Pain Gore Death. With no inclination toward anything to do with modern death metal, The Path to Ruin is a simple, no-frills EP that relies on the weight of its delivery rather than any kind of inventiveness. It’s ridiculously primitive and bare-bones, almost to a fault, but it’s still an engaging listen, even if its value doesn’t go much beyond a few cursory spins.  Continue reading

Initial Descent: February 26, 2016

anthrax band

Awws, look at how grey Scott Ian’s dumb goatee is now. If it weren’t so stupid, it’d be kind of adorable. Anyway, it’s Friday, and a packed one at that. Loads and loads of new releases to get to this week, not just from Anthrax, but also VoivodDeströyer 666 and a ton more. That’s all outlined below, so let’s not waste any more time than we need to. Here’s what’s on tap for Friday, February 26:

Album Review: Coffins – Perpetual Penance

coffins perpetual perm

If you look back at the discography of Japanese death-doom legends Coffins, you’ll see that split singles and other small releases are the band’s bread and butter. They’ve only put out four full-length albums since they started releasing music in 2000, meaning that up to this point, a lot of their output has been scattered, hard to find or vinyl-only. The new compilation, Perpetual Penance, is meant to correct that problem, bringing together tracks from splits with bands like Stormcrow, Hooded Menace, Noothgrush and Warhammer, live tracks and more into a two-disc set. And this is no throwaway B-sides collection; Perpetual Permanence is an exploration of all the sides of Coffin’s sound, and an essential collection for any of their fans. Continue reading
