Its been a long time since I posted anything for Nine Circles. Of all the things 2017 has been for me, it has definitely been the busiest I’ve ever been. I joined more bands, recorded drums / vocals for other bands, art for my bands and other bands, PR for my bands and others, started a record label, and a bunch of other stuff. I miss being more active with Nine Circles but it looks like the current staff has been crushing it!
Anyway, the time has come for year end list. I love reading everyone’s lists and seeing what albums I might have missed or maybe need to check out again. I hope you find some new music in here you will enjoy. Continue reading
When you were a child, chances are that when you went to the beach, you felt the desire for being buried in sand, leaving only your head above the ground to enjoy the sunshine and watch people splash merrily in the water. Somehow, at some point, that innocuous playful urge transformed into a paralyzing fear of being buried alive. On Deliverance from the Godless Void, the hooded pallbearers of Finland’s Desolate Shrine provide a soundtrack for your premature burial and eventual asphyxiation with a monstrous wall of noise that will drown your futile screams and the tortured sound of your nails scratching hopelessly on the interior of the coffin. Short work week ahead so that’s always a plus but we still have a few days to slog through to get there. And it’s Monday so hopefully you’re caffeinated and ready to roll. But if not we have the perfect playlist consisting of all the stuff we jammed on last week to help you get the proverbial juices flowing and see you through the day. We hope you dig it and as usual you can subscribe to our YouTube channel here to get a jump on what we do the minute it happens. Instant gratification at its finest. Anyway, head inside and hit the play button… Continue reading
If you listen to our podcast regularly, you’ll know I’ve already run down my Top 15 albums of the year. If you don’t… firstly, what the hell’s wrong with you? And secondly, you can find my picks here (Nos. 15-11), here (10-6) and here (top five). I try to avoid being redundant — thanks, journalism school! — so I didn’t want to rewrite these picks out here again on the blog. Instead, this post will cover nine honorable mentions for 2015. These may not have made the final cut, and they certainly aren’t the only honorable mentions I’ve got from this year, but they’re all well worth your time. Here’s what I’ve got: Continue reading
“Listen to [this album] with a candle burning and you will see your entire future.” – Anita Miller (Almost Famous)
With The Heart of the Netherworld, Desolate Shrine members LL (the band’s only instrumentalist), MT and RS (vocalists) have put forth an astounding, sweeping 63-minute effort. It’s their third release in only five years, and second on Dark Descent Records. Hailing from Helsinki, Finland, where we can only assume from the sound of this record that all is dark, dismal and cold, Netherworld is a heavy, oppressive release of blackened death metal sure to leave a mark on your emotional development. It is no mistake that this album is released in the dead of winter.
