The impressionistic artwork that adorns the cover says it all: a being, stitched together from the bones, blood and sinew of many things. The semblance of something recognizable, but also out of joint. Dark and disturbing, but backed by a pastoral beauty. Art is subjective, and whether I’m looking at the image painted by Cedric Wentworth or listening to Salt, the debut from Khôrada, I’m left with the same impression, of recognizing frameworks and influences even as the whole defies easy categorization. In other words, the best kind of music to my ears. Continue reading

CANTO: Khôrada, updates from Ozzy and Mastodon, and more
“Hide my fears and kill my doubts, whatevers in my way. Poppin’ pills and drinkin’ booze,
smokin’ everyday. Stoned and drunk completely gone, my world is here to stay.”
- This was big news from last week that I missed because I was traveling. Ex-Agalloch members Jason Walton, Aesop Dekker, and Don Anderson have teamed up with Aaron John Gregory of Giant Squid to form a new project called Khôrada.
- How about some Ozzy related things? He previously said his career was still going strong and it looks like he means. Once this Sabbath tour over for good, it sounds like he will be hitting the studio for some solo stuff.
- How about some Mastodon stuff, too? According to guitarist Bill Kelliher, the dudes have already been working on new material and will try to jump in the studio in October or November.
- Might Jason Newsted team up with Metallica again? Aside from just praising the new material, the former bassist has opened up about his communication with the thrashers.
- Remember Lordi? I sure do. And now you can too with this totally NSFW video for “Hug You Hardcore.”

CANTO: Opeth tour, the end of The Acheron, Neurosis updates, and more
“Listening to you as you say your prayers – Evil bears with deadly stares. Ripping you apart to protect what’s theirs – There is no escape from the furious bears!”
- More news out of Opeth. The death metal legends that aren’t really death metal anymore are embarking on a North American headlining tour with The Sword. The tour runs through the month of October basically.
- Really depressing news for the New York City populace out there. The Acheron announced today that it will be shutting its doors permanently. The final show is July 9th after an impressive six year run.
- Neurosis updates! The Californians will be releasing their 11th album, titled Fires Within Fires, on September 23rd. They’ll be playing some shows in Europe, for those on the other side of the Atlantic.
- We covered this on the pod, but here it is again (significance!). 75% of Agalloch (Don, Aesop, and Jason), will be continuing on as a separate project. It will be different, but how much different?
- Finally, Ghost Bath has released a video for “Happyhouse.” Check it out. Because why not?
