Album Review: Darkthrone — “Eternal Hails…..”

The world is changing. Faster than anyone would believe, and faster yet in the last year. It’s terrifying and impossible to unsee: in the vicious upheaval of the past year where everyone moved a thousand miles an hour in a thousand different directions it felt like there were fewer and fewer things to cling to. Where were the anchor points, the tethers to a known quantity…something to remind us of the underlying laws of the universe?

Far off in the distance something looms at the horizon. A shape of immeasurable size, and a sound that reverberates in frequencies older than the dinosaurs start to roll in like a massive tide that has been building and building forever…eternally, one could say.

They are back. We stare into the inky unknown black of the night and know that whatever happens, Darkthrone have returned to light the Earth with the torch of heavy metal, to scorch the ground with the prehistoric concussion of Eternal Hails….., the latest piece of evidence that the Old Ones still walk among us, and they have zero interest in anything but the Almighty Riff.

The Nine Circles Audio Thing: Darkthrone was May 2019’s Album of the Month!

It’s a crowded house, but not Crowded House because we’re a metal site and I can’t get anyone to do a retrospective on the genius of Temple of Low Men. Anyway, if you’re reading these words you know it’s Album of the Month time and – as usual – it’s right under the wire. But when you have a new album from Darkthrone you’re damn right we’re gonna want to talk about it. That’s right, folks…Old Star is our Album of the Month selection for May 2019! Continue reading

CANTO: Darkthrone, Cryptopsy, Enthroned, and Amon Amarth

darkthrone

Silver needle, golden nail. It’s a song.

  • We obviously have to start with the big update from Darkthrone. The next studio album from Fenriz and Nocturno Culto, titled Old Star, will be out on May 31st through Peaceville. So much good news there.
  • Cyptopsy are about to hit the road with Aborted, which is enough news on its own. But there’s an extra layer to this one… if you plan on attending one of the show dates and feel like bringing a couple local brews with you to share with vocalist Matt Mcgachy, you could get in for free! Fuck, I want to do that so badly! I love beer AND death metal!
  • Updates from Enthroned, which is a name I definitely haven’t mentioned in awhile. The Belgian black metal group is set to release their next studio album, titled Cold Black Suns, on June 7th. You can check out a new song called “Silent Redemption” right now.
  •  Amon Amarth have released details behind their next album, and coupled it with a new video for a song called “Raven’s Flight”. Berserker will be out on May 3rd via Metal Blade… soon!

Throwback Thursday: Darkthrone’s “Soulside Journey” Turns 25

Darkthrone soulside journey

Yes, the above header is accurate. On January 13th, 1991, Darkthrone‘s debut, Soulside Journey, was released to the world. This means two things: 1. We somehow missed this last week. Thank God I pay attention on rare occasions. And 2. This album has hit the quarter-century mark. Obviously I could go on and on about how that makes us feel old or some shit. But that’s boring and cliched. What is notable, however, is how consistent Darkthrone have been over the past couple of decades in cranking out new music. It has been a… unique ride for them, so it’s worth looking at where it all began. Continue reading
