Recently, Seattle’s Bréag Naofa released their EP Cearo via their Bandcamp page in digital and vinyl formats. And have since released II via Halo of Flies and, again, on their Bandcamp page. So, needless to say they’ve been busy but what they offer is an expansively dark version of post metal sprinkled with sludge and black metal. To dismiss it would be a grave error as the results of both Cearo and II are stunning and extremely well executed. We got the chance to ask Roger Kilburn (guitars) our set of Profile questions and he was kind enough to oblige with great answers. See for yourself after the jump.
Cloud Rat sometimes sound like punk grindfreaks, but they don’t sound that way on this commemorative split release care of Halo of Flies and Dry Cough Records. You might anticipate that Disrotted will go at a funeral pace, since they’ve been a doom band from the beginning, but Cloud Rat serve fans notice that they’re likely to change style fitting for their creative impulses. It teaches us not to expect things, which sometimes results in pigeonholing a band for doing one thing distinct.
Well, we’ve made it to the eve of Easter. For you youngsters out there be mindful of time as it happens and seize the moment, you will get older and time will fly by so fast you’ll miss everything. Speaking of seizing the moment, there’s tons of great metal to enjoy this week so let’s get to it. Craven Idol lead us off with their second full length of blackened thrash, The Shackles of Mammon — full review and interview links are moments away and worth every second of your time to investigate. Next up is Vaiya with their mesmerizing take on atmospheric black metal and first proper full length Remnant Light. Moving on, Buckshot Facelift melt ears, faces and everything else within hearing distance with their heady mix of death metal, grindcore and powerviolence on Ulcer Island. Hexis show us how blackened hardcore violence is properly put to tape on Tando Ashanti, and old school thrashers Blood Feast are back with their first release in 28 years, The Future State of Wicked, and honestly you have no idea how much you’ve missed them until you hit play on this wicked good album, get it — trust me. Blackened hardcore post-metal doom acolytes Hexis don’t need monikers such as that. All that you need to know is that the music is violent, abrasive and intense. The beats slam on the brakes in sections where the guitar feedback is utilized, and the double-kicks send nails, hammers and the kitchen sink at listeners during the rapid tremolo-pick and blastbeat segments. Not entirely of the blast and stop style like some bands use, Hexis up the ante on modern violent metal the likes of which fans of Primitive Man and Fister will love to death. Hexis’ Tando Ashanti is the shit, you bastards!
If there’s one thing that Switzerland’s Rorcal can’t be faulted for, it’s their prolificacy. Now on their fourth full-length following a string of splits, short EPs, and a live album, the Geneva-based sludge/post-metal outfit stretch into even more ambitious territory on their newest output, Creon. Based upon the story of its eponymous figure (a pleasure for a scholarly nerd like myself), the music on Creon is fittingly bleak and nihilistic as its respective subjects, each of whom fits the mold of the classical Greek tragedy. Rorcal’s winding, monolithic mixture of sludge, post-metal, and blackened doom burrows deep into the psyche, and while Creon has a share of small problems, it’s a compelling, albeit draining listen.
