CANTO: Iotunn, Summoning The Lich, Culted, and More

Oh look, America broke. Who could have EVER seen this coming?? Anyway. 2/26 seems to be a popular date in today’s announcements…

  • Summoning The Lich just signed on to a deal with Prosthetic Records back in October, and today have announced details surrounding their debut album. The fantasy-themed death metal crew out of St. Louis will release United In Chaos on February 26th. Check out that clip for “The Nightmare Begins” while you’re at it.
  • Iotunn, the progressive metal band out of Denmark, have unveiled new album details. Access All Worlds will also be out on February 26th, through Metal Blade Records. Today, they released a new single for “Voyage of the Garganey I”, which can be heard at that link as well.
  • We’re still paying tribute to Alexi Laiho at Nine Circles, so let’s pause here and take a few minutes to watch this cover of “Downfall”. That clip includes members of Immortal Guardian, Helion Prime, and Oceans Of Slumber.
  • Blackened industrial doom project Culted are releasing a new album on, you guessed it, February 26th through Season of Mist, titled Nous. You can pre-order that here. Check out the new video for “Black Bird” immediately below.

Album Review: Helion Prime — “Question Everything”

Helion Prime - Question Everything cover

We’ve been doing a fair bit of talking about dinosaurs on this website as of late, so perhaps the only logical place to go from there is dinosaurs…IN SPACE.  Well, sort of.  You see, while Marc Whisnant’s incredibly kick-ass cover art for Helion Prime‘s newest release Question Everything draws you in with the promise of giant cybernetic alien sauropods, the album itself deals with subject matter that is arguably more kick-ass than even that could be.  What’s cooler than dinosaurs in space, you ask?  Let me explain.  Continue reading

August 2018 Power Metal Album of the Month: Helion Prime – “Terror of the Cybernetic Space Monster”

PMAOTM - Helion Prime

When the debut self titled album by Sacramento’s Helion Prime arrived on the scene the first thing people were talking about was that cover.  And I get it: that thing is unabashed in its love and glory for over the top science fiction.  A lot of people couldn’t;t get past that cover, which is too bad because underneath was a killer power metal beast, blending modern and classic elements from both sides of the Atlantic.  A few years and a few vocalist changes later and the band is back, doubling down on robot dinosaurs with the awesomely titled and equally fun Terror of the Cybernetic Space Monster.  How could it not be our August Power Metal Album of the Month?   Continue reading

Initial Descent: August 12, 2016

mizmor band
Ahead of a live debut at Migration Fest, Oregon’s Mizmor releases its new full-length, “Yodh,” on August 12.

Hey kids. I’m technically late with this because I’m at Migration Fest, but you know what? As I’m writing this, it’s only 9:45 AM out here in Olympia, Washington, so you can suck it. We’ll keep it quick because I’ve got a lot more to get to today — namely, exploring, festival stuff, beer drinking, etc. What’s coming out this week? Well, the highlight is Mizmor, whose new full-length, Yodh, finally drops today. There’s also stuff from Equilibrium (who I definitely didn’t realize were still a band), Vader, and all manner of other things. Marsh Dweller also technically drops on Monday, but I’m gonna cover it this week, because it’s pretty cool. So take a little look below and see for yourself — here’s what we’ve got on tap:
