We skipped a week, again. Because things. But we’re back and man, I’m still loving that new art up there. It’s the little things in life that brings joy these days. Anyway, these playlists are sort of like Initial Descent in a way, you might find a song you haven’t heard or a new artist you had no idea about OR you simply use this to pass the time while mowing the lawn or kicking a can. No idea what you do with it but use as you wish. This week we’ve got picks from all over the place: some new some old and some bl…wait. Seriously, it’s another solid bunch that we’ve been jamming since Vol. 50 and it’s long enough to run through a twelve pack, or three, so score. One last thing: I know all of you understand the concept of a comment section so listen to this thing and offer up some picks you would’ve included. Or not, choice is yours.
The past three weeks, since our last Playlist, has seen a treasure trove of excellent music. It really hasn’t mattered where your preferences lie in the metal spectrum, there’s been something for every taste imaginable. And in these past three weeks we’ve featured some of it, discussed our album of the month for June, highlighted an album that turned 18, featured excellent artists via our Profile piece and talked about much more amongst ourselves, as we do on a daily basis. So, make sure to go back and check it all out for yourself. Anyway, it’s Saturday and we’ve got another playlist full of some of those things just mentioned and some of the things we just haven’t been able to get enough of. You can subscribe to our YouTube channel here, if that’s your thing, and be sure to leave your recent favorites in the comments section or hit us up on the socials. Have a great weekend!
The impressionistic artwork that adorns the cover says it all: a being, stitched together from the bones, blood and sinew of many things. The semblance of something recognizable, but also out of joint. Dark and disturbing, but backed by a pastoral beauty. Art is subjective, and whether I’m looking at the image painted by Cedric Wentworth or listening to Salt, the debut from Khôrada, I’m left with the same impression, of recognizing frameworks and influences even as the whole defies easy categorization. In other words, the best kind of music to my ears. Continue reading →
Kicking off another week, first thing, here on Initial Descent. None of you spoke up and said you hated the move to Monday so you’re stuck with it but I can’t think of a better way to get the momentum going than some new metal. Let’s do this.
First up is the fantastic debut, Seasons of Salt, from Khôrada which sees ex Agalloch and Giant Squid members unite to form a dark and challenging but beautiful piece of work. Mutilation Rites return with their fiery and filthy brand of black / death metal on Chasm, Future Cult sees The Lion’s Daughter mix extreme metal with 80s style slasherwave which equals a big score, and Wölfblood pull all the stops on their motorpunk, speed warped EP Nightriders which finally sees physical release so get on it.
There you have it, week is officially kicked off. Great openers but there’s many more to get into so stick around. We’ll be seeing you here throughout the week.Continue reading →
