- Fleshgod Apocalypse dropped some exciting news today. The Italian symphonic death metallers are returning to North America in 2020 with support from The Agonist. But wait, there’s more! They’re bringing a classical string quartet with them! That’s certainly going to take their live show to another level… not that it isn’t ridiculous (in a good way) already.
- Let’s add another reason why I need to be at the LA version of Decibel Magazine Metal & Beer festival, yeah? Prosthetic Records is teaming up with Decibel (duh) and Metal Monkey Brewing to release the “Hops of No Light” double IPA. It will be the official beer of the festival, which is ambitious. Because it’s a double IPA. And those murder (in a good way). I would know, I’m drinking a Heady Topper right now.
- So this is a wicked bummer because I super enjoyed the debut album (see also: only album) from Khôrada, but it appears that project ended as quickly as it started. It was a very quiet announcement, with a couple members dropping info on the socials and whatnot. I’m not going to direct more people in that direction because that’s always a tired game, but here’s the link to the Metal Archives page if you need visual confirmation of some kind.
- Not really much along the lines of new videos today, so here’s an animated clip for Lunar’s track “Comfort”. Prog metal on a Tuesday, why not? Their latest album, Eidolon, dropped last Friday through Divebomb records.

Welcome to another Saturday. This weekend is a busy one for me, but at least this time it’s because I have a bunch of fun things I’m doing instead of having to trudge in to work. I’m still taking a second out of my morning to prepare, though, and there’s no better way to do it than with our weekly mixtape playlist. This week I’m still pretty much just listening to Envy, Charles does me proud by throwing in my favorite Black Sabbath song, and Anton bumps the new Cattle Decapitation single. Strap yourselves in folks, because this is a good one.

Second: holy shit how am I alive right now. I’ve been sick for pretty much this whole week and folks I gotta say, it’s not fun (although staying home from work has been very choice indeed). Extreme thanks for picking up my duties this week goes out to my Nine Circles brethren, I’m thankful for the great friends I do this with, including our newest additions to the crew Marie and Charles. Ah, yes. Here we are again. Yet another journey around the sun has given us reason to pause and reflect on how lucky we are to have, almost literally, an indefinite source of music and art to appreciate at any moment in time. In this case, the musical form known as heavy metal. Yes, even in our very defined place in the artistic world, there is an unending wave of inspired music that we endlessly celebrate, together, across the globe. Ah, 2018. What an absurd, exhausting and often infuriating ride you were, with death as my ubiquitous companion and co-pilot. You entailed on one hand a near-cataclysmic series of loved ones dying around me in rapid succession, while on the other, an ever-flowing stream of metal that helped make that maelstrom somehow survivable and acceptable for yours truly.
As you, the well-informed reader, likely noticed during the course of the year, and will see again when you read further below, 2018 was a banner year for death metal of all colors and shapes, but most and especially for the boundary-pushing kind that redefines and reconfigures the entire genre. Another type of metal that really resonated with me was one of transcendence and catharsis, of dreamlike journey, cosmic marvel and triumphant rebirth. Overall, the vast array of diverse evolutionary pathways, latest career pinnacles, and dazzling artistic growth and achievement in the field of metal was a compelling sight to behold and a wondrous thing to experience.
As further proof of the excellent and exciting state of metal today, albums worthy of inclusion in the below list continued to be released until the very final days of the year, resulting in perhaps the strongest December release-wise in recent memory.
With this succinct backdrop in mind, I offer the following 23 releases as a tribute to goddess Eris. Continue reading
