We had this playlist all sorted until Enslaved dropped “Homebound” and now we’ve got a new lead off video. If this is any indication of what to expect from their next album, we are in for a treat, folks. A TREAT, I tell you. We’ve got that, some new Couch Slut, a new one from Ulcerate and Triptykon, Sorcerer and Binary Code, and Zyklonius closes things out in epic fashion with a 24 minute Fleshvessel pick. All that and much more awaits directly below. Making your Saturday better is our goal so we hope you’ll enjoy. Missing brother Vince? No worries, he’s off saving the world but he’ll be back in short order. Kick back, pop a top or fresh crack a bourbon, and enjoy some tunes. See you here again soon.

What does music do for you?

In the end, it’s the only question that matters.  An admittedly hard question to hear, what with the screaming of every opinion in every corner of the internet, but in the end when you step away from the noise and muck of screen shouting and scene guarding it’s your opinion in the end.  Every year that I’ve written an end of year list for Nine Circles it’s been a variation of the same theme: when we write about music, we’re writing about ourselves.  What matters is what the music does to you, and only for you.

Nine Circles ov…2018: A Mid-Year Report

We’re about to hit the mid-point of the year, and as ever the amount of quality releases seems to increase with each passing breath.  I’ve spent some portion of attention to 183 metal releases so far, and in a year where I find my personal tastes drifting more and more away from metal there’s always something that manages to pull me back in.  So far there doesn’t seem to be a particular genre or style pressing its nose against the Trend Window™ (unless you count the amount of sax going on I guess…) and I’ve been surprised at the sheer variety of music pulling at my nerve endings these past six months.

So similar to last year, consider this edition of Nine Circles ov… a snapshot.  It’s a measure of a point in time, personal to me and indicative as to where my head’s at halfway through the shitstorm that is 2018.  And since that’s probably all the justification I’m going to give, so let’s do this. Another weekend, another relief. It’s been a long and I mean LONG week but finally it’s time to kick those feet up and let the rough side drag. And you better believe I’m letting it drag whilst listening to all this week has to offer and HEY, you should be too. Kicking things off is the ultimate good time, off-kilter and absolutely outstanding Netherlands with their new EP Hope Porn — hit up “Rewild!” and let your worries melt away. Next up is The Atlas Moth with Coma Noir and I’m telling you now, this band has never sounded better, progressive sludge at its finest. Following that is Under the Mountain by King Witch and I dare you to find a better song than “Ancients” — the 70’s swing and classic rock vibes just drip from every note here. And closing the top slots this week is Fu Manchu with Clone of the Universe and honestly their brand of desert rock hasn’t sounded this good since the days of “Weird Beard.” Look that up and get back to me.
