I’m pretty pleased that the first review I put out in the new year is for an album I’ve been patiently hoping for for quite some time. Nothingness‘ The Hollow Gaze of Death was an album that absolutely blew me away upon first listen, albeit well after the album was originally released, but now I get to be in on the ground floor and say that Supraliminal, the band’s sophomore release and first new album in close to four years, ups the ante by a considerable bit. If you’re even remotely a fan of death metal, you’re going to want to get in on that ground floor with me.

In this, the third full week of new releases, if anyone thought Katatonia wouldn’t be at the top of said third week list, you have been hiding under a rock. This will sound weird but Sky Void of Stars is the most current Katatonia sounding album ever, and I mean that in the best possible way. However, there are more excellent releases that need your attention in the form of death metal from Nothingness, deathdoomgrind deliciousness from Turbid North, and melodic black metal from Inherits The Void. Speaking of knowing us or not; what am I going to say next? Yep, you guessed it…and there’s many more in the list below that are definitely worth seeking out. Ok, ok, trivia time is over. The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 259 (11.26.2022)

For those of you who celebrate it, welcome back from the throes of mass turkey consumption, of stuffing annihilation, and of pie decimation. For the rest of you, simply welcome back. I got a huge Thanksgiving gift when I learned Elder released their latest album Innate Passage a day early on Bandcamp, and then it just kept coming when I finally got to hear the totality of the new Spiritworld album. Both albums are putting serious crimps in my already drafted end of year list, so let’s kick off with them for this, the 259th Nine Circles Playlist.

The rest of the gang managed to pry themselves off the couch and offer up the usual assortment of metal maladies to get your body in shape for the holiday rush. We’ve got Jade, Fvnerals, live Der Weg Einer Freiheit, new Nothingness and Shedfromthebody. We’ve got a big ol’ epic from The Otolith, tracks from Esquela Grind, Intranced, and Reeking Aura. You want a little more moody and a little less extreme? Okay: we’ve got you dialed in with some Kathryn Mohr, some Silversun Pickups, and for the countryheads out there even a little slinky funk courtesy of Paul Cauthen. And one of the best bands in the world to close it out.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 258 (11.19.2022)

I love the phrase “cold comfort”. Taken in its intended meaning, the world may be falling apart, but at least the music’s been good, right? But I also find that with the cold weather comes the deep desire to drown in a wash of the nostalgic, the lived in, the…well, comfortable. So we’re kicking off the 258th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist with the remaster of “Total Eclipse”, rightfully put back in the track listing for Iron Maiden‘s seminal 1982 album, now packaged with the incredible Beast Over Hammersmith live album.

From there we move onto more extreme corners, kicking things off with new Candlemass before going full on throat ripping with Sanguisugabogg, Ribspreader, Psionic Madness, Turbid North, Spider God, and new Nothingness. There are small breaks with classics from Against Me! and Refused before diving back into the filth with Cloud Rat, Wormrot, Falls of Rauros, The Otolith, new Gaupa and a lot more.
