Best of 2019: Charles’s List

Best of 2019

Every year I come up with a list of albums, and every year I have trouble trying to firmly rank them. Also, doesn’t everyone just scroll to the end to see what the best album is? I know I do. So here’s my list where the first entries are the best, and it gets decidedly fuzzier after that. But one thing is certain, every album on this list is one of the best albums of the year. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

(ed: Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, or just happy Wednesday, whatever. Consider this a break from the family deal where there’s too many bags of torn gift wrap and cousin Eddie is playing banjo on your last nerve. Enjoy Charles’ picks and check all these out seeing as you’ve got all those gift cards and/or extra cash burning a hole in that pocket.)

All In: The Nine Circles Combined Staff Top 9 of 2019

Best of 2019

In a few short weeks another year will finally kick the bucket.  At this point most of us are on autopilot, dead-walking through a daze of days gesturing in the fervent hope we can pass as having some semblance of work ethic until the clock turns over and it’s back to the same old song and dance again in the Year of Our (Loud) Lord 2020.

Until then, we managed to pry some choice picks of 2019 from the gnawed fingers of the 9C staff.  We’ve crunched the numbers, tallied the votes, screwed up and tallied them again, and came up with the first ever (unless I’m wrong… it’s too late and I’m too lazy to check) Nine Circles Combined Staff Top 9 for the year.  It’s basically a Nine Circles ov… Nine Circles, v. 2019. So enough procrastinating… hit that link and let’s do this thing. Continue reading

*Note: Abbath isn’t actually in this list.  That is an oversight, because I’ve been loving Outstrider.  But any chance to post a picture of Abbath can’t be passed up, so… Continue reading

Nine Circles ov…2019: A Mid-Year Report

Screen Shot 2019-07-02 at 9.03.13 PM.png

Anyone feel oppressed by the ridiculous heat blasting through the Northeast?  It almost makes you want to take a month off of writing for a website.  I kid, but in truth I needed some time because the amount of quality metal that has been coming out this year has been INSANE.  Label faves like Season of Mist and Gilead have been routinely hitting it out of the park, but great music has been crawling out of every nook and cranny, and it’s dizzying to be caught up in the middle of it.  I had a list of about 14 I wanted to throw on here, but in keeping with the nature of the column I stuck to nine, all released this year before 7/1, and all on Bandcamp, because dammit let’s support artists with dollars, not fractions of pennies (plus it makes the formatting nice).

So here’s a glimpse of where my head is currently at.  We’ll see where these land come end of year, but right now they’re red hot and in constant rotation in my ears.  Onward. Continue reading

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 78 (05.04.2019)

playlist - mixtape

This is one of those weeks where I sincerely hope you all are doing better than I am.  As you can probably tell by my absence in our Friday column, I am laid up with all manner of plague, illness, and devilry this week.  The one saving grace has been a barrage of good music, both new and old.  The trifecta of new Gilead Media releases have all had their first tracks released, a rip-roaring new single dropped from my hometown heroes Immortal Bird, a stunning new collab between Full of Hell and Lingua Ignota, and the 30th birthday of The Cure’s Disintegration reminded me just what a masterpiece that album truly is.  These things have been carrying me through the week on their shoulders, and I’ll let them speak for themselves in our mixtape playlist below.  Now, to keep watching Diners, Drive-In’s, and Dives to remember a time when solid food was an option for me…
