Receiving the Evcharist 2018

We’re back, and this time we’re diving back into the world of good old-fashioned craft beer.  Receiving the Evcharist is our weekly feature where we pair choice albums with our favorite libations.  Drink from the cup of heresy.  This week’s offerings: Psychonaut and Sâver’s Emerald and 18th Street Brewery’s Psychedelic Lines.

Rainbows In the Dark: Kauan — “Ice Fleet”

Kauan - Ice Fleet

If you’ve listened to Kauan before, you’ll know that really processing what you’re hearing on a given record of theirs can be a bit of a tricky proposition. Some bands are quick hitters, while others work better in slow-burn settings. Kauan, however, has excelled consistently in both contexts. They strike the listener immediately with immense, sorrowful beauty, but their work is so rich that fully “unlocking” a song or album of theirs on your first listen, or even your fifth, becomes nearly impossible. To truly “get” this band, you need to put the time in — and that remains the case on their latest album, Ice Fleet.

Album Review: Genghis Tron — “Dream Weapon”

March 25, 2021March 25, 2021IanLeave a comment

I still remember, plain as day, when my buddy first lent me his copy of Board Up the House, and I definitely remember the jaw-dropping, what-the-fuckery that followed from the first time I hit play.  A lot of music pushes boundaries, but this was truly unlike anything I had ever heard before.  It was vicious, unconventional, and most importantly, it was incredible.  But then, as soon as they appeared on my radar, Genghis Tron were gone.  Until now.  Truly the heroes we need, the boys are back and, on Dream Weapon, they break a thirteen-year silence, but maybe not as you’d expect.

Album Review: Empress — “Wait ‘Til Night”

November 24, 2020November 22, 2020Angela BlockLeave a comment

It seems a lot of metal bands these days enjoy playing with subgenres and creating hybrid sounds.  I love the creativity of these groups and their courage to explore the space and make something unique.  Australia’s Empress is one of those experimental bands and their latest release, Wait ‘Til Night, is an alluring combination of shoegaze, doom, indie, post-metal, and black metal.  This album is dark yet delicate, haunting, and dreamy.  The band’s signature sound is fine tuned in this, their sophomore album.
