Interview: Black Sheep Wall on their upcoming album “Songs for the Enamel Queen” and breaking a long silence, Covid effects, long songs, record labels, upcoming plans for 2021, and so much more!

It’s been a hot damn minute since LA’s Black Sheep Wall released new stuff, but thank the sludge gods Songs for the Enamel Queen will be released this week. Seven tracks of devastating sludge, emotionally heavy post-metal, and earwrecking hardcore is just what the doctor ordered for an hour break to hang all your anger, suffering, insecurities, and just bullshit of the world in general on. And it is a BEAST. I can’t turn away from it, the heaviness, nastiness, delicate intricacies, and deeper dive into what their last album “I’m Going To Kill Myself” eluded to in the experimentation department. I had the chance to ask the band about the new album and the looooong silence between albums, how Covid affected them, their love of longer songs, record labels, upcoming plans for the rest of 2021, and so much more. The band was so amazing with their answers and you can tell they really love what they’re doing and absolutely take it as serious as possible, I’ve got nothing but love for them. Last week was a good week. Finally. Lots of reasons and none of which matter to anyone but me. I mention it because it was an anomaly as of late and demanded mentioning. And, I’m all out of witty one liners—even though last week was full of crappy but funny movie quotes—so you got that for an opening statement. Yay you. Anyway, new week means new releases and we got a ton of them to get to and from all corners of the vast metal and metalish landscape. Looking for some incredible sludge that bites back? Black Sheep Wall has your back. How about some shamanic doom? Sunnata saves the day. Or maybe some filthy doom/sludge is calling? 16 and Grime do it and do it well on a split so you’re covered there. Or maybe some exceptionally low end driven, crazy, avant-metal fits the bill? You guessed it, Timo Ellis is looking out for you—just sayin’, I’ll die on the hill of Timo Ellis and Netherlands so there’s that to entice you. Here we are, again, with Initial Descent and why so soon you ask? Well, Initial means “existing or occurring at the beginning” and since we don’t have too many Sunday posts today is the beginning. Hence, “Initial Descent” and Saturday just ain’t it anymore. Feel strongly one way or the other? PLEASE, leave it in the comments and tell us how you feel and what you like or dislike.

Moving along, this week we have NY’s extreme avant-garde black / death metallers Imperial Triumphant triumphantly return (yep, I did that) with their third full length Vile Luxury, Churchburn are back with their doom laden second full length None Shall Live…The Hymns of Misery, Seattle’s duo Pound offer up their debut Pound which will make heads spin from the dazzling display of technical virtuosity and Deafheaven come gazing back to explode the internet on Ordinary Corrupt Human Love. 1..2..3.. has it started yet? No worries, it will.

Profile: Ryan Schutte of Seattle’s Experimental Mathy Grind Duo Pound

For a band that consists solely of two members that play a nine string guitar and dual drum kits respectively, Seattle’s Pound make one hell of a sweet racket. Set to release their debut full length, Pound, in July via Silent Pendulum Records this duo will readily lay to rest any doubts of reading a descriptor such as “mathy grind over ridiculous grooves with a pinch of doom and a techy heart.” Yes, there is quite a a lot thrown together here but the seamless way guitarist Ryan Schutte and drummer David Stickney string it all together, cohesive and hypnotic are words that float right to the front of the brain. I’ve said before that an instrumental band absolutely has to give it all to keep attention spans and Pound do this in spades. We recently had the chance to sit down with Ryan armed with our set of Profile questions to find out what makes the band tick and he knocked it out of the park for an extremely interesting read. Initial Descent: February 18 – 24, 2018

So, we’re back again. How was the week? Busy here and at one point I actually got to see the sun for once — made me happy. What’s got you excited this week? Nothing? Well, this week’s list of new metal is longer than the line waiting on summer vacation and hopefully this will lift the spirits. Leading us off this week is grindcore phenoms WAKE with their latest bunch of brutal, Misery Rites. Next up is Dead Empires who added a singer and managed to make their best hardcore / heavy as balls album yet with Designed to Disappear. Rolling on is Insect Ark with their stunning and unique horror soundtrackish / doom metal on Marrow Hymns and closing out the top spots is Huntsmen with American Scrap, an album that really surprised me with how it combines King Dude’s type of dark americana with razor sharp doom metal — trust me, this thing just works.
