CURSED IMAGERY: The Week in Album Art (July 19, 2019)

I’m starting to wonder if this segment might be better with a monthly frequency. Like, there’s usually a decent selection of solid pieces of album artwork from week to week, and this week is no exception. But, the truly ridiculous pieces — the ones this segment was, ostensibly, created to highlight — seem to be fewer and farther between all the time. Although, to be fair, I never expected my post frequency to be as consistent as it has been, so maybe I just need to start being a bad blogger again? I don’t know. These are the things you think about when you write about bad album art, kids. Don’t jump into this field lightly. Anyway, here are this week’s highlights:

Initial Descent: July 14 – 20, 2019

Summer is my favorite but even I’ll admit that it’s hot. I mean, skin melting hot or even better, swamp ass hot. Seriously, the early morning dark gives up 92% humidity and a real feel of 95 when the actual temp is 80ish. So yea, time to find a cool mountain stream or something. Anyway, short list of new metal this week so let’s get to it…

Tomb Mold is one of those rare bands that started out on fire but on their third full length of stellar death metal, they’ve hit a whole other level of superiority. Much the same can be said of Falls of Rauros fifth full length — and debut for Gilead Media — of folky, atmospheric black metal – all roads of this band’s past lead here, period. Rogga Johansson’s involvement list over the years reads like a mile long rap sheet which means this dude is so well versed in the ways of death metal that his latest solo effort bleeds straight up insanity in the best kind of way. And then there’s WORMED, capitalized for a reason – these guys make technical death metal look easy as they continue the wild tale of Krighsu, the last human in the cosmos. Put that in your cosmic pipe and smoke it. 

Do the thing and jump in there, the quality continues even though the quantity wanes, temporarily. I’ll be over here taking an ice bath. Continue reading

Best of 2018: Vincent’s List

It appears I’m destined to be late to the party with my year end list, again.  But really, who reads year-end lists in January anyway?

I do.

And you, apparently, read them as well, so thank you for checking mine out.  This year was quite a ride for me, with not as many ups as there were downs unfortunately, but I made it through, and if there is nothing else for me to hold on to, it’s that.  I made it.  I’m still here, I still have a roof over my head, a loving partner, and the support of a legion of family and friends.  And as always, good music to provide the soundtrack along the way.

Which brings us to what stood out to me in 2018.  While this was a great year for music as any we’ve been having, my list this year is a little more brief than previous years.  I found a lot of albums I liked this year, but the ones that I loved came fewer and farther between.  Perhaps this was a product of my headspace not being the best for most of the time.  Maybe I’m just getting pickier as time goes on.  Who knows.  Lists are subjective, and this is only representative of one humble person.  But if you’re curious about what I kept coming back to over the last twelve months, then read on…

Best of 2018: Dan tried to keep up on his metal. It went…not great.

So, I was looking back at my year-end post from 2017 the other day, and I had to laugh. As you may recall, I opened said post with a little self-pat-on-the-back for finally making good on my pipe dream of taking in less music. (I listened to 165-170 albums over the course of the year, which is still a shit-ton, but it was down significantly from years’ past.)

Well, my count this year will make that one blush. As of this moment, my “2018” folder on Spotify – the place I archived playlists for all the albums I really sat down with and took time to enjoy – consists of just 91 playlists. And that’s from albums across all genres, not just metal. Continue reading

Best of 2018: Chris’s Honorable Mentions List

We’ll save the long-winded rhetoric for the final list.  There’s fifteen albums listed here that are categorized as “Honorable Mentions” because that’s typically how these list things work.  But in reality it’s a disservice to relegate the incredible music contained herein to a tier of “also ran.”  I spent much of the year thinking about what I needed music to do for me, and hunting for the songs, the bands, and the albums that worked – selfishly – for me.  All of the albums listed below work on me and for me: pushing me to move further, holding me back when I’ve gone too far.  I can’t ask for much more than that.  Last year I titled my honorable mentions albums #40-26, but in truth a number can’t define the reinforcement and excitement this music provided.
