Thanks Fearless Editor Josh™ for holding down the fort last week! I’m back to traveling again for work which means not only was I away in Dallas which was colder than New York last week, but I also picked up the convention crud. But they say nothing cures the crud like a nice whiskey and some metal, so let jump into this the 269th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist, kicking off with some of what kept me entertained while I was away: WuW, which might be in the running for my favorite release of 2023 so far. Their new album L’orchaostre just came out so be sure to jump on that post haste, whodoncha?

From there I’m gonna be generous and let the staff take over. We got some classic prog-infused Enslaved, new music from Fredlös and Lamp of Murmuur, a fossil from Grouper, some classics from Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne to honor the man upon the news of his retirement from touring, and then just a ton of metal, including Boris, Yob, Burial Hordes, Atonia, Maggot Crown, Siege of Power, Terrestrial Hospice, Black Math Horsemen, Thrice + Holy Fawn and a ton more.

Memory can be a fickle thing. Too many years have passed since the release of 2015’s celebrated Eyes Alive and my recollections have admittedly become somewhat hazy, but I nevertheless recalled Turbid North sounding entirely different than the barrage of singles released ahead of The Decline, an album that contains a degree of ferocity and variety you don’t get to hear every day.

In this, the third full week of new releases, if anyone thought Katatonia wouldn’t be at the top of said third week list, you have been hiding under a rock. This will sound weird but Sky Void of Stars is the most current Katatonia sounding album ever, and I mean that in the best possible way. However, there are more excellent releases that need your attention in the form of death metal from Nothingness, deathdoomgrind deliciousness from Turbid North, and melodic black metal from Inherits The Void. Speaking of knowing us or not; what am I going to say next? Yep, you guessed it…and there’s many more in the list below that are definitely worth seeking out. Ok, ok, trivia time is over. Profile: Jono Garrett of Turbid North

The Turbid North camp has been relatively quiet for some seven years and change now, but next month will see their fourth effort The Decline set free for all to experience. And what an experience it is! The RIYL list on this thing contains some of extreme metal’s heaviest hitters as well as various psychedelic rock legends, plainly put: Turbid North severs arteries with vicious deathgrind in one second and gazes into the great beyond the next. The storyline here is as deep as the album’s many riffs and serpentine twists which just goes to show that the last handful of years were not wasted when it comes to the band outdoing themselves, which they have. We expect this album to be an early contender for the best 2023 has to offer so be sure to check it out from the links contained within. We recently posed our set of Profile questions to the band and drummer Jono Garrett was kind enough to respond. And, since we’re in Best of 2022 season, he also offered his top five. The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 260 (12.3.2022)

Look, you know me and my old-school love by now. Would anything other than the new Metallica going to kick off this, the 260th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist? “Lux Æterna” sounds like a band enjoying themselves, playing a lost cover from the past as part of their Garage Days series and I for one am here for it. Plus hot off the presses another killer track from the forthcoming Katatonia? 2023 can’t get here fast enough.

Elsewhere the 9C gang brought it home with some truly neck-breaking metal, including Meristem, Confined and Ultimatum from Josh as well as Panopticon, Pianos Become the Teeth, Pyrithe and – breaking the “P” streak – City of Caterpillar from Vincent. New Guy™ Colin brings the heavy with Moribund Dawn, Anaal Nathrakh, and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard in firm metal mode, while Slightly Older New Guy™ Dan hits us with Heads for the Dead, Boris, Chrome, and Black Dresses. Angela invites you to get dark with Gavran, Chelsea Wolfe and The New Values while in a twist, Anton brings up the rear guard with a pair of killers: Turbid North and Ketha.
