Hello. Been a while, hasn’t it? Every year feels like it’s passing us by faster and faster, but the overwhelming amount of things to process this year has already made it impossible to fathom that 2022 is halfway over. If you are curious as to what music has been keeping me grounded for the last six months, now is as good a time as any to check in and see what the standout albums of the year are, as far as one humble author is concerned. Down to business then…
As I write this it’s a few short hours until the next Record Store Day. I’m not normally the type to burst to my LRS in the dawn light just to snag an overpriced variant, but when you have sweet reissues from Opeth and Voivod, plus the debut of The Lord from Greg Anderson, well…you know I have to set the alarm for that, right?
So yeah…we’re gonna kick off the 228th edition of the Nine Circles Playlist with what you can expect from those heavyweights, but we got more of the concrete coming straight for your head. Anton welcomes new music from Exocrine, Misanthropic Rage, and Ufomammut to the playlist while Josh doubles down on the brutality with Black Braid, Crypticus, Paganizer, Butchers Burial and a killer new track from site favorite Spirit Adrift. Vincent is knee-deep in his Pyrithe review, so he’s serving up some of their music along with Ultha, Orville Peck, and some classic New Order. Ian returns to the playlist with some Kardashev and Gojira, along with a healthy dose of the Pixies and some Planning for Burial. Angela is digging the latest from Tribulation and…wouldn’t you know it? For the first time, so am I! And she also has Mountaineer and Telekinetic Yeti bringing up the rear for this week.
Before you start reading look up. See that image up there? When I see a cassette I think of mixtapes and maaaaan, I used to love making those. But even better was receiving them through snail mail from other folks with like minded music interests. Cassettes have made a comeback but in this digital age, those tape trading days are sadly behind us. Playlists have essentially taken their place and as of today Nine Circles has brought you fifty of them. To celebrate this 50th volume, we figured we’d spruce it up a bit. Hope you dig it, I know I do. Anyway, we’ve got another great bunch of tunes to share that left a mark over the past few days, dig in below. And HEY, share your own picks in the comments section or share some that might have made it onto your personal mixtape back in the day.
Good morning, it’s time to metal. Here’s some news you might have missed from over the weekend:
As usual, a whole bunch of bands dropped new music on Friday, including Craven Idol, Oranssi Pazuzu and more. Check out Josh’s recap for the full list!
Woe and Ultha were kicked off the Hamburg ist Droneburg festival. Apparently, officials at the venue playing host to the festival got cold feet after finding out the groups had once played at a different festival with Inquisition. Never mind the fact that both bands are openly anti-fascist. Just disregard that little tidbit.
