Most of us are eager to dart into 2020 and leave 2019 in our wakes. While I’m ready for a fresh start and a new year, I want to linger in 2019 a little longer to savor the musical releases. Many wonderful albums were released this year which made narrowing down and ranking my top picks a challenge. The albums that ended up on this list are albums that resonated with me—albums that I kept revisiting, I kept blasting through headphones, and kept giving me goosebumps.
I decided to pick 9 albums in honor of Nine Circles and this wonderful community that welcomed me in this year. Let’s dive in! Continue reading
This past year for me was spent quietly tending to personal projects and family concerns. Most of the reviews I wrote were in the first half; the second half I mostly concerned myself with releasing another Domestikwom album, starting a movie podcast with Chris, and a YouTube channel with occasional Nine Circles contributor and Qoheleth noise man Jeremy Hunt.
When I finally lifted my head above ground, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I had actually done a good enough job of keeping up with the year’s new releases that I could put together a list I could stand behind. Continue reading
Its been a long time since I posted anything for Nine Circles. Of all the things 2017 has been for me, it has definitely been the busiest I’ve ever been. I joined more bands, recorded drums / vocals for other bands, art for my bands and other bands, PR for my bands and others, started a record label, and a bunch of other stuff. I miss being more active with Nine Circles but it looks like the current staff has been crushing it!
Anyway, the time has come for year end list. I love reading everyone’s lists and seeing what albums I might have missed or maybe need to check out again. I hope you find some new music in here you will enjoy. Continue reading
He’s back! Our brother from the north and black metal maven Jonathan Petkau (Domestikwom, Dudeist Priests, Spacekau, Respectably Loud, etc.) has taken the metaphorical pen in hand to draft up some words on his favorite music of 2017. Without further ado, here’s Jon!
On a global scale, 2017 was a garbage fire of a year, and 2018 doesn’t show any signs of dying down. It is so omnipresent it often overshadows the personal goals I was able to achieve this year. I put out two EPs (one featuring one of my all-time favourite guitarists), as well as my first full-length album which for so many reasons is one of the things I’m most proud of (after family, etc.). If we all go out in nuclear fire or global warming floods tomorrow, at least I was able to get that one in under the wire (nervous laughter).
To combat the void staring us all in the face, I’d like to talk about the music that made me happy, because talking about said music also makes me happy. And if you in turn find that reading this makes you happy, fantastic.
This list will be alphabetical and not ranked: doing so at this point would not encourage my happiness. Continue reading
On July 21st, Violet Cold‘s latest full length album Anomie, will be available as a special edition on vinyl and cassette. It is 100% an opportunity worth jumping on, and if you’re familiar with this project and this album, you already understand why. We’ll get into some of the details about all that a bit later. But for now, we would like to celebrate the approaching July 21st date with a stream of the mesmerizing third track on the album titled “Lovegaze”. Check it out below. Continue reading
