Profile: Ropa of Youdash

Youdash
Youdash

Call it weird or call it eccentricity but Youdash are amazing, simply put. The fact that they released their debut full length Astrophobia so late in 2016 only means that many missed this album for their end of year lists, but our own Zyklonius did not, check out his review here and see it on his Best Of 2016 list here. The way this band keeps you guessing is second to none but makes for probably one of the best albums of last year that was totally off the map of anything anyone would expect. Gorguts, Car Bomb, Meshuggah and Naked City are but a few of the many influences you’ll hear on this album but definitely doesn’t tell the entire tale, and yes it is indeed that varied. We recently had the opportunity to ask Ropa (vocals) our series of Profile questions, see what he had to say after the jump. Continue reading

Best of 2016: Zyklonius’ List

Nine Circles Best of 2016 Standard

I am writing this intro blurb on Christmas eve, on Lemmy’s birthday and almost exactly a year after his death. Today, the largest newspaper in Finland published a fascinating article discussing Lemmy’s life (unfortunately in Finnish). The article’s lead paragraph notes the failure of humanity to carry on without Lemmy and the shockwave his death created, paving the way for 2016 in all its depressing grimness. Continue reading

Initial Descent: December 11 – 17, 2016

Murg
Murg

Yep, here we are amongst best of 2016 list season and in true form these final weeks are looking to be list busters. But hey, on the bright side we have tons of great new metal just in time for the hectic shopping and traffic season. So, strap on a pair of headphones, get out there and brave it. Sweden’s black metallers Murg return with their second full length Gudatall which is as heavy on black metal aggression as it is on suffocating atmosphere, Grafvitnir offers scathing and utterly evil black metal on Obeisance to a Witch Moon, Call of the Void continue their amalgam of death, grind, punk and sludge metal on AYFKM (guess what that stands for), Black Cilice gives us yet another cold and blistering black metal release for the week on Nocturnal Mysticism, and Youdash bend time as well as all constraints of typical death metal thought patterns on their strikingly good debut Astrophobia. Stellar week here on Initial Descent and we still have more to go so continue the exploration, after the jump. Continue reading

Album Review: Youdash – “Astrophobia”

a1864194817_16

Somewhere in the multiverse there is an alternate earth where ice-cream, cotton candy and LSD are served on every meal, Lemmy lives and reigns as a benevolent god emperor, people travel by riding sentient technicolor clouds, nu metal never existed and everything is groovy and awesome. In that world, scientists and magicians joined forces to open a portal through which they sent to our dimension their best and brightest metal band on a mission to inspire awe and show us how it is done. That phantasmagorical shapeshifter is Youdash and they have unleashed their phenomenal debut Astrophobia into our unsuspecting timeline. Its impact can only be described as seismic. Continue reading
