Album RAMBLE: Periphery — “Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre”

Periphery - Periphery V Djent Is Not a Genre

We (the Top Brass, Benevolent Overlords, etc: Corey, Dan K, Chris, and Josh) had so much fun drunkenly rambling about Sky Void of Stars and Foregone that we decided to come back for round three! This time around, we’re taking a first dive (some of us actually followed this rule) into Periphery V, the highly anticipated new album from djent stars Periphery. Josh is very much aware and familiar with the Periphery discography while the rest of the group is very much unaware. So. How shall this go with that in mind? Will Josh be the only one left standing? Will we collectively end up new fans after this? We ask the hard questions around here, and rarely answer them. But, maybe this time something will be answered.

Need a reminder of how this works? Sure, you can have one. We pick an album off the promo pile we’re interested in, we get drunk, and we share our first impressions. Cohesive reviews can be hard, and we don’t get paid for this shit. Deal with it. Let’s fucking go!

Periphery 2023

What is it in music that makes certain songs, albums, bands really hit that sweet spot for you? This is a question I think about a lot that I haven’t come up with a really good answer for, yet. Case in point: I was a casual listener of Periphery until Periphery IV landed and now I’m all in. That album hit me like a ton of bricks in the best of ways and I’d consider it a desert island album at this point. Anyway, moving on to new releases and speaking of; Periphery hits us with another stone cold gem of djent power that is fast approaching my feels on the last album. Then we’ve got some tech death from Gorod, avantgarde black metal from The Lovecraft Sextet, and delectable brutal death from Depraved Murder. But, as always, there’s a ton more to dig into just below these four so do that and let us know what hits you in the feels. Also, let us know if you have a genuinely good answer to the opening question and I don’t mean “because it’s good, dummy.” See you here throughout the week.

CANTO: Dawn Ray’d, Oak, Periphery, and More

Hammering this out quickly, because I actually have something to do after work for a change.

  • Leading off our Thursday, we have an update from Dawn Ray’d. Their new album, To Know The Light, is set for a March 24th release through Prosthetic Records. Give “Ancient Light” a watch and listen.
  • I know a few of us are excited about Periphery V: Djent is Not a Genre, so we’ll go to the full update from Periphery next. Their new album is out on March 10th through their own 3DOT Recordings, and they’re streaming a couple new tracks, titled “Wildfire” and “Zagreus”. Get all that good stuff through this link.
  • Experimental dark doomers Fvnerals dropped a new single titled “Yearning”, which can be heard here. That’s taken from the duo’s forthcoming new album, Let the Earth Be Silent, which is set for a February 3rd release through Prophecy Productions.
  • Symphonic metal veterans Kamelot are releasing The Awakening on March 17th through Napalm Records, and today they shared the first single from that effort. Give “One More Flag in the Ground” a listen here.
  • We’ll close out with the latest from Oak, something I am quite excited about. The video for “Disintegrate II” is available below. Their new album, Disintegrate, which is in actuality a single 45-minute doom metal pummeling, is out on February 10th through Season of Mist.

It’s amazing the crap we deal with on a day to day basis. Utterly amazing…pretty much all I’ve got for an opener AND it’s only Monday. Go figure. However, we’ve got some aggressive tunes to soothe the pain this week in the form of a destructive death metal debut from Tribal Gaze and yes this is the the same Tribal Gaze that put out that barnburner of an EP last year. Next up is a long awaited diesel fueled rock storm from Clutch, an extreme and obtuse outing from Destrage, a consistently METAL outing from Wolfheart, and a crap ton more in the list that follows. Do what you do best and go show all these bands some love via whatever purchasing outlet you land on. It’s as easy as copy / paste from here and the rest is history. Happy hunting and we’ll see you here throughout the week.

Album Review: Astronoid — “Radiant Bloom”

astronomic - radiant bloom

Sometimes it’s all about refinement. You take a thing, you make something of it and the people take a look and say, “yeah, that’s it!” But you know it’s not, and if you can just whittle a little more away from the body you know you’ll see it. You try again, and some folks look and say “Eh, that’s not what I thought it was going to be.” Still others come by and exclaim “yeah, that’s IT!” But you know there’s more to pare away. Astronoid have been at this sonic whittling session since 2012, and on their third full length Radiant Bloom the quartet have further sliced away more of the abrasive, metallic bits. What is left is still recognizable as Astronoid (it really couldn’t be anything else), but honed to a point where I think the band can sit back and marvel at the sonic sculpture they’ve exposed, even if it’s only until a further turn unearths another form the band wishes to explore.
