CANTO: Cloak, Oak, Ahab, and More

Man, the gloomy weather the last three days has really messed up my vibe.

  • Anyway. To better things. Imperial Triumphant, Cloak, and Couch Slut are touring together early next year here in the U.S. With that announcement, Cloak also offered an update on their next album. Their third full-length should be out in the first half of the year through Season of Mist, and you’ll be able to hear some new material during this tour.
  • Ahab are releasing The Coral Tombs on January 13 through Napalm Records, and today they shared the music video for “Colossus Of The Liquid Graves”. It’s a beast. Their fifth studio album will mark their first full-length in eight years, so we should all have this one circled heading into the new year.
  • Fvnerals presented the second single from Let the Earth Be Silent, titled “Ashen Era”. Give that a listen here. That new album, by the way, is out on February 3 through Prophecy Productions.
  • We’ll close out Wednesday with another new track out of the Season of Mist camp. Oak is releasing Disintegrate on February 10, and today they unveiled “Disintegrate I”. Give the video for that track a watch below. I’ve gone through it a couple of times, and I’m obsessed. Just saying.

“Ein Bier… bitte.”

Best of 2020: Jon’s List

Best of 2020

Since every minute of every day in this year of our Lord 2020 seems hyperattenuated to *gestures vaguely at all of this*,  you don’t need me to remind you of anything. If you are reading this, you survived, and I hope that continues. While I count mine (and my family’s) survival as the accomplishment of the year, other things I didn’t hate were the Domestikwom EP I put out in June titled Wallowing in Misery, along with launching a full fledged website for fellow Nine Circler Chris and I’s movie podcast Cinema Dual.

I was also able to pull focus long enough to check out some albums this year, and unlike the year that spawned them, I was pretty impressed. Hopefully you find something you like or even something new. Best of luck next year.   Continue reading

Best of 2020: Josh’s List

Best of 2020

I could wax for paragraphs on how 2020 leapt into the toilet in March and continues to swirl, deeper in, teetering just on the edge of complete obliteration, but that would be news to no one. In a year when bands could’ve easily went into hiatus based on no way to tour or support themselves—and honestly no one would’ve blamed them—we are damn lucky to have any music at all much less any best of lists. Thankfully the bands turned it up, tuned low, and cranked it out anyway, despite the thought of any sort of monetary return. In short, metal freakin’ ruled this year and kept me sane while the world crumbled and hope was fleeting at best. My music collection grew like my headphone time at dangerous volume levels (according to my apple stats) and I loved the fact that bands sounded angrier and louder, experimented more, stretched thin genre lines to the limit, and generally laid their balls on the chopping block in a way we haven’t heard in a long time. That chopping block bit was one of ten rules I made for my 2020 list back in January and all the artists that made my list did just that in one way or another but my picks this year were also about the albums that really stuck with me for either the long haul or made a fast impression. So, keep reading and maybe one, or more, of these will hit you the way it hit me.

Nine Circles ov…What Didn’t Make My 2020 End of Year List…(But Could Have)

Next week I’ll be posting Part 1 of my annual glut of end of year posts, but there’s usually so much I enjoyed I like to spread the wealth a little bit and put some beloved but odd-man-out entries out there for you to consider.  In a dumpster fire of a year like 2020, putting anything out is kind of a miracle, but the amount of quality music – let alone metal – is kind of astounding. It served as a balm when I needed to calm down, as an ignition switch when I needed to get fired up, and as a wail of despair when I didn’t think I could take much more of what life was throwing at me.

So similar to years past, any one of these could have made my final list.  Maybe it was a lack of time, maybe it was something that stood as a taste instead of a meal…maybe it’s just that what I needed was served elsewhere.  Doesn’t make this list any less righteous.  So for this edition of Nine Circles ov…, let’s stop talking and get into the good stuff.
