I am writing this intro blurb on Christmas eve, on Lemmy’s birthday and almost exactly a year after his death. Today, the largest newspaper in Finland published a fascinating article discussing Lemmy’s life (unfortunately in Finnish). The article’s lead paragraph notes the failure of humanity to carry on without Lemmy and the shockwave his death created, paving the way for 2016 in all its depressing grimness. Continue reading

CANTO: Drama at Metal Magic Fest, Whitechapel/Suicide Silence tour, and more
“I received your light, I received your wound, as a funeral rite for a heart entombed. As stigmata, envoys of the grave of holy creed. As your hand demands to fear, your canon requires to persevere. To claim the heart of those pierced by such immense deceit.”
- This actually dates back to last week, but I’m amused by it so I’m still sharing. Members of Flotsam and Jetsam and Shadows Fall have opened a weed dispensary. Medical purposes only, of course.
- Haven’t mentioned a new tour in awhile, so here’s one that I won’t be attending. Suicide Silence and Whitechapel will be co-headlining a run of dates through North America. They will be supported by Despised Icon, Carnifex, and Oceano.
- Well this got aggressive. During their set at Metal Magic Fest in Denmark, Deströyer 666 frontman K. K. Warslut antagonized the crowd to the point where a fight between him and an audience member broke out on stage. I did say it got aggressive.
- Troubling news from a legend. During a Hollywood Vampires set, legendary Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry collapsed on stage. He is stable now, but had to be carried away and hospitalized.
- Finally, here’s a headbanging horse for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

Best of 2016 So Far: Dan’s List
It’s been a busy half-year. After promising myself in January that I’d take it easy in 2016 and be more selective with the music I listened to, I proceeded to listen to roughly 125 albums in the first six months of the year. (You know, after listening to 170 all of 2015 and thinking that was too much.)
At any rate, I’ve done enough of these over the years for you to know the drill. I’m doing a Top 10, followed by 10 honorable mentions. A full sixth of my album listening in one post? So be it. As always, I’ll keep the blurbs for each album brief so as not to become tedious. Yada yada yada. Now let’s jump into the list…
Best of 2016, Q1: Dan’s List
So, yaeh…where the hell did the first three months of the year go? It’s April already? Really? Time flies when you’ve got a lot of good music to get through, and man, did we ever have that in Q1. All the death metal, and black metal, and death metal, and sludge, and death metal. Seriously, it was a good three months for death metal, y’all.
Corey and I already got started on our lists earlier this week in Episode 37 of the podcast, but now it’s time for my full breakdown. Same deal as usual from me — a Top Five, followed by five honorable mentions — so let’s dig in. Here’s my best of Q1 list: Continue reading
Initial Descent: February 26, 2016
Awws, look at how grey Scott Ian’s dumb goatee is now. If it weren’t so stupid, it’d be kind of adorable. Anyway, it’s Friday, and a packed one at that. Loads and loads of new releases to get to this week, not just from Anthrax, but also Voivod, Deströyer 666 and a ton more. That’s all outlined below, so let’s not waste any more time than we need to. Here’s what’s on tap for Friday, February 26:
