It’s August, which I feel is enough time to start building the argument that one of the releases destined to end up on my 2020 EOY list is a compilation of demos that were originally released in 1990. One of my “safe places” during this shitstorm that is the current world politic has been retreating to the sounds that made me fall in love with metal, metal that moved beyond the hairspray and whirlwind solos that attracted me in the first place.
With that in mind, I want to focus this edition of Nine Circles ov… on the absolute treasure trove that is Divebomb Records (not to mention parent company Tribunal Records). The work they’re doing releasing obscure and oftentimes unrecognized early metal gems—not to mention some great packaging when it comes to physical releases—has been exemplary, and the chance to highlight some of the many, many great pieces I’ve found digging through their Bandcamp page is one I couldn’t pass up. Sometimes when discussing a bands newest release, it’s crucial to speak about their history to provide the reader with a proper understanding of what they are getting into. Architects were formed in Brighton in 2004 by twin brothers Dan and Tom Searle. Through their formative years they mixed and matched various styles of metallic and hardcore musings until they really found their footing on 2014’s fantastic Lost Together//Lost Forever. Following up with the monstrous All our Gods Have Abandoned Us, Architects were on a mission that seemed unstoppable. Then, tragedy struck the band in 2016 with the untimely passing of founding member/guitarist/main song writer Tom Searle.
No one would have blamed Architect’s for calling it a day after such a loss. However, they have soldiered which brings us to their eighth and latest album, aptly titled Holy Hell. It represents a band rising up from the darkest depths imaginable. Putting iron to forge, Architects have manufactured a musical amalgamation that unfolds in waves of visceral anger, desolate sadness and in venturing to such depths, finds catharsis. Its been a long time since I posted anything for Nine Circles. Of all the things 2017 has been for me, it has definitely been the busiest I’ve ever been. I joined more bands, recorded drums / vocals for other bands, art for my bands and other bands, PR for my bands and others, started a record label, and a bunch of other stuff. I miss being more active with Nine Circles but it looks like the current staff has been crushing it!
Anyway, the time has come for year end list. I love reading everyone’s lists and seeing what albums I might have missed or maybe need to check out again. I hope you find some new music in here you will enjoy. Continue reading →
Anyone complaining that there hasn’t been a great week for metal thus far in 2016 needs to go immediately and start over, but there won’t be any complaining after this week. Mostly due to Neurosis‘ highly anticipated eleventh full length Fires Within Fires finally seeing the light of day. But that’s not all; Fatalist are back with their insanely good Swedeath saturated The Bitter End, Predatory Light further their black metal chaos on Predatory Light, Trap Them punch you in the mouth with their fifth album Crown Feral while Witchskull breaks out the bluesy doom on The Vast Electric Dark. Switching gears a bit, Dysrhythmia bends time on their progressive instru-metal album The Veil Of Control — let the dissecting begin. And last but not least, Insomnium‘s epic fifth full length Winter’s Gate is a blast. As stated, its another stacked week here on Initial Descent and literally, there’s something for everyone.
