Donuts & CANTO: Uada, Wintersun, Exhumed and more!

April 4, 2017
Good morning, it’s time to metal. Here’s some news you might have missed from the weekend and yesterday:
- On Friday, as per usual, a whole bunch of bands dropped new albums, including Mastodon and Falls of Rauros. Also as per usual, you can check out Josh’s Initial Descent post for the full breakdown.
- So that “Batushka dropping out of MDF” speculation we posted on Friday? Well, it’s pretty much confirmed; on Saturday, the festival organizers revealed that Uada had been tapped to fill the Poles’ slot at the Festival. Still a bummer, but they could have done far, far worse as replacements go.
Quickies: More Boo-Hoos from Wintersun, Obscura News, and More
It’s Friday, I’m tired, and I’ve got a bus to catch, so these will be brief. Here are today’s Quickies–let’s see what we missed in the metal world today:
- Remember yesterday’s Quickies, when it seemed like Jari Mäenpää had quit his whining and started to focus on recording new Wintersun things? Well…that statement was a bit premature, because here he is complaining again. On Facebook, no less.
- Good news from Obscura: they’ve started pre-production on their follow-up to 2011’s Omnivium! I’ve no idea what this interactive project might be, but color me intrigued either way.
- Also in remember yesterday: that new Chris Broderick / Shawn Drover project? Welp, it’s got a vocalist: former Scar the Martyr frontman Henry David Bonner.
- Veil of Maya is going to be releasing…something…on January 1, 2015. Which is good news if you care about Veil of Maya. (We don’t.)
- And finally, here’s a parody of Ghost’s “Year Zero” that we never knew we wanted:
I’m gonna go sleep for the next 34 hours. Enjoy your weekends, folks.

Quickies: Exit Bumblefoot, (Re-)Enter Pepper Keenan, and Holy Hell, Allegaeon
Busy night ahead, so let’s keep these quick. (HA! Get it? I hate myself for that one.) Anyway, it’s time for Quickies–let’s check out what we missed in the metal world today:
- Another one bites the dust? Guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal has suggested he might put his solo career before his gig as guitarist-du-jour in Axl ‘n’ Pals. Sorry, I meant “Guns ‘n’ Roses.” He’d be the ninth guitarist to peace out on Axl.
- Well that didn’t take long: ex-Megadeth members Chris Broderick and Shawn Drover have started a new project together. I can personally guarantee this will be better than any output from the Daves and their new lineup.
- Oh look, Jari Mäenpää’s stopped complaining about his lack of studio and actually gotten into a studio, presumably to do Time II things! I’m really excited to hear this in 2018, guys!
- Corrosion of Conformity’s heading back to the studio in January…with Pepper Keenan! Color me all kinds of excited for this.
- Jonathan Dick has a great piece up at Noisey about why you shouldn’t apologize for liking heavy metal. Read it.
- And finally, Allegaeon just jumped a whole bunch of spots on my favorite humans list.
Goddamn, can these guys entertain me. Kinda reminds me of Iron Maiden’s “Holy Smoke” video, but with a not-shitty song. Anyway, that’ll do it for today. Check back tomorrow for you-know-what!
