Initial Descent: March 14 – 20, 2021

OLDE – courtesy of Samantha Carcasole

Last week was a week. Here’s hoping this one isn’t. Who’s ready for live shows? Anyone got a wager for when that’ll be? Will we ever get back to normal? All pertinent questions that no one really has an answer for, but all are questions that burn in all our minds. News to no one, I get it. Anyway, we can dream…I guess. Moving on to some new metal, and at least that rubs me the right way; OLDE are back with their outstanding brand of blue collar doom/sludge (seriously, this thing rules and consequently, this band can do no wrong), Mare Cognitum are still excelling at cosmic black metal, Dvne get massively heavy and surprisingly subdued at the same time (it works, trust me), and how about some slam meets deathcore from Distant who actually do a great job at crushing this genre combo. Go get all these new tunes and dream for the day when we might actually get to see all this live again.

Receiving the Evcharist: False Gods and Smuttlabs’ Snaccident

Receiving the Evcharist 2018

Hey all, happy Friday. I’m bringing this wonderful piece of content your way this week because I accidentally stumbled on some delicious local offerings recently that I felt the need to talk about. I’ve been listening to some new music as well… in between repeat listens of the latest from The Ocean and Enslaved. Obviously. Shall we quench our thirsts?

Album Review: Chrome Ghost — “The Diving Bell”

Wherever you are, whatever your situation is, I hope you’re well and safe.  It’s not ideal times, but I’m looking on the bright side by taking advantage of good tunes and a lot of extra time to listen to them.  One album that I’ve been really excited to dive into is Chrome Ghost’s sophomore full-length The Diving Bell.  Although digitally released last November, the album is getting a physical release via Seeing Red Records.  Whether you’re already a fan or you’re just hearing about it now, do yourself a favor and get the vinyl of this one.  You’re worth it. Initial Descent: July 15 – 21, 2018

Khôrada
Khôrada

Kicking off another week, first thing, here on Initial Descent. None of you spoke up and said you hated the move to Monday so you’re stuck with it but I can’t think of a better way to get the momentum going than some new metal. Let’s do this.

First up is the fantastic debut, Seasons of Salt, from Khôrada which sees ex Agalloch and Giant Squid members unite to form a dark and challenging but beautiful piece of work. Mutilation Rites return with their fiery and filthy brand of black / death metal on Chasm, Future Cult sees The Lion’s Daughter mix extreme metal with 80s style slasherwave which equals a big score, and Wölfblood pull all the stops on their motorpunk, speed warped EP Nightriders which finally sees physical release so get on it.

There you have it, week is officially kicked off. Great openers but there’s many more to get into so stick around. We’ll be seeing you here throughout the week. Continue reading
