The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 264 (12.31.2022)

That’s it. So long 2022, don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. I just posted my end of year list, and yeah: the #1 pick is a crossover hardcore punk album that incorporates free jazz and noise and everything under the sun…what else did you expect? So let’s kick off the last edition of the Nine Circles Playlist with the mighty OFF! and see what else will help us close out the new year.

To paraphrase The Outer Limits, I will control the horizontal. I will control the vertical. So that means I’m also going to front-load this with the 80s metal I picked up on vinyl and cassette this week. Which means you’re getting dosed with some classic Accept and Satan…you’re welcome. Elsewhere in the Nine Circles universe we’ve got plenty of heavy to ring in 2023, including music from Angerot, Shores of Lunacy and Leper Colony, a blast of bangers from Yob, Mizmor + Thou and Nechochwen, more killer music from Predatory Light (I really need to revisit that) and Moonlight Sorcery, not to mention D. Morris BRINGING IT with some classic Harvey Milk. There’s a ton more, including God Mother, Windhand, Asunojuokei (for once not added by me, so thanks Ian!), and Morrow, among others.

That’s it for 2022. Get listening. Stay safe. See you next year…

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 263 (12.24.2022)

It’s Christmas Eve. I’m rocking a killer stomach ache, either from the abundance of pizza mixed with a drink called the Suffering Bastard or the near crippling anxiety of having to leave shortly to spend time with relatives. So let’s just get some tunes in your ears.

We’re kicking it off with a blast from MY past: Lillian Axe released their first album in 10 years this summer and I only found out a few days ago. I love it, and their video for “I Am Beyond” will have to tide me over until the CD arrives later this week. Elsewhere we have what I’m guessing is a fan-made video for Këkht Aräkh, whose two albums are now on vinyl courtesy of Sacred Bones and I’ve been all in on. There’s some great Enslaved with a big band, August Burns Red doing the Christmas thing, new music from the likes of 71TONMAN, Esophagus, and High Command, a few older gems from Panopticon and Windhand, and then Vince takes us home with a bevy of rocking Christmas-themed tunes, including (of course) a stone cold classic from Mr. Diamond…

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.

The Nine Circles Playlist Vol. 235 (6.11.2022)

Get ready folks…more sax-infused metal coming your way whether you want it or not. Some folks are sick of it, some folks love it…either way, you’re probably not going to be able to escape it. Just recently I’ve had the skronk of a reed instrument accompanying the likes of the latest from Imperial Triumphant (featuring Kenny G no less), a massive opener from the forthcoming White Ward album, and hot off the presses the new single from staff favorites KEN mode which absolutely slays. In other words, just another day for the 235th Nine Circles Playlist.

Elsewhere the 9C crew leave the orchestra instruments behind for some gnarled metal. Josh whips up a frenzy with new tracks from Hammer King, Inhuman Condition, Soreption, and some classic Slayer. Anton ups there ante with Aara, Panzerfaust, and High Castle Teleorkestra. Ian only brings one track to the playlist this week but it’s a whopper…if you’ve never heard the theme song from Home Improvement masked with the vocals of David Lee Roth, well…I welcome you to the insanity of Neil Cicierega. After mellowing things out a bit with some Elliot Smith, Vincent hits us with some Lantlôs and The Black Atlantic. Finally Angela closes the list with new music from Wake, recent Dopelord and Windhand.

Get listening. Stay safe. See you next week.

voivod

It’s not coming home. Oh well.

Hey, it’s our third day in a row of Canto! If we get to five, Corey has to buy a Justin Bieber album! If we don’t, he has to eat a shoe! Here’s your metal news:

  • Leading off, Voivod announced its 14th studio album, The Wake. The album will arrive September 21st on Century Media, two years after the mini album, Post Society and more than five after its last full-length, Target Earth. Get excited, y’all!

Concert Review: Sleep and Windhand (June 22, 2016)

Sleep

Sleep has been doing a few select tour dates this year with direct support from Virginia’s new doom legends, Windhand. I had the privilege of attending the sold out show at Mr. Small’s Theatre in Millvale, Pennsylvania. There were no locals on the show as Windhand and Sleep together had sets long enough to fill the 3 hour show time. Attendees had packed in early as not to miss a moment of either band.
