Nine Circles ov…Random VNYL Metal Records

It started about two years ago, and I have our Fearless Editor Josh to blame.  For Christmas I received a flat, square cardboard box containing a creamy white edition of the self titled album from Succumb.  I didn’t have a turntable…yet.

Two years later and I have a hefty collection spanning a plethora of genres, largely thanks my inability to stop my subscription to VNYL, a curated record subscription service.  Every month I get three albums created to my tastes based on my listening history on Spotify as well as my Discogs collection.  It can be hit or miss, particularly with their metal selections, but every time I start to pick up the phone to cancel another batch comes in with a surprise that makes me think, “Damn…maybe I should hold off another month.”   So for this edition of Nine Circles ov…let’s dive into nine curated metal selections sent to me and see if they’re truly reflective of my listening tastes.

As always, let’s do this. Continue reading

Wake Up and Smell the Satan! – November 2, 2018

wake up and smell satan

While the midterm elections and Dia Del Los Muertos are sure to give many opportunities for infernal sightings, the most thrilling of all this week on the black metal and death metal front may be in Berlin.

(The teenagers who allegedly planned to sacrifice classmates to Satan and drink their blood may be close, though.)

Nuclear War Now and Iron Bonehead are partnered up for the Never Surrender Festival, which began yesterday in Germany. The slate of bands is an impressive one: Temple Desecration, Faustcoven, Sabbat, Evil, Grave Upheaval, Blasphemy and Xibalba are just a few of the performers featured.

If you are reading this, chances are you missed your flight to Berlin and won’t be there. Never fear, because college radio station KFJC has got you covered with both a video and an audio feed of the festival. Watch the video stream here or if you prefer to just listen, the audio stream is here.

Because of time differences, those in North America will have virtually a full day of death metal and black metal concerts today and Saturday.

CANTO: More Laughter this Summer, Ozzy’s New Home, and Good News from Ne Obliviscaris

Ne-Obliviscaris

We’re halfway there, everybody! And I couldn’t be more excited about it. Switching gears completely, anyone else notice the insane amount of good music coming our way this month? God damn.

Good stuff right there. Heavy stuff right there.

Album Review: Xibalba – “Tierra y Libertad”

Xibalba-Tierra-Y-Libertad---big

Xibalba is often described rather simply as a mixture of death metal and hardcore. But that doesn’t really do them justice. The California-based group’s fourth full-length, Tierra y Libertad, strategically combines sonic elements from across the board to create a fairly cohesive, entertaining sound. The band often sounds like they’re writing with a particularly brutal live show in the back of their minds, but make no mistake: this album is definitely strong enough to listen to and enjoy from the comfort of home and headphones as well.
