Blood Red: Hooptober Se7en – Week Se7ev

Last night we sat and counted the final minutes until the month changed over.  Another one down, and an extra hour to boot.  Small recompense for the lifeless dread I feel as I write these words.  Maybe I watch horror to capture this feeling in a way I can contain, as opposed to the reality which feels much too big to properly grasp and control.  We ultimately use art for our own ends, and though I was looking forward to moving on to other genres now that Hooptober. was ending I find myself wanted to creep back into the dark once more.

I’m still here, still masked, wondering when I can take the costume off.

Once last time, let’s get to the recaps… Continue reading

Blood Red: Hooptober Se7en – Week Six

The end is fast approaching.  Take that any way you like; but (for now) I mean that we’ve hit 30 of the requisite 31 films at this point in Hooptober.  I’m aiming to complete the bonus two films as well as the final official entry next week, so there’s still one more Blood Red left before we part for another year.

In the meantime, let’s get to the recaps… Continue reading

Blood Red: Hooptober Se7en – Week Five

It was the week of sequels…it was the week of video nasties.  It was also the week of a damn fun anthology film.  October is finally getting to its true form, with temperatures dropping (at least here) and the leaves moving from the beautiful array of colors to crumpled and dead at my feet.  Only a few weeks left to get this marathon completion, and then maybe I can focus on actually writing a metal review or two.

Anyway, let’s get to the recaps… Continue reading

Blood Red: Hooptober Se7en – Week Four

Greetings and salutations, friends and fiends.  Peeking out from under the covers to see if the world has gotten any better since last week and…uh…yeah, nope.  Gonna just get back under here with my pretzels and beer and VCR and see if playing more horror movies will help improve things.  At least we got some hilarious tweets about that fly in Pence’s hair.

Anyway, let’s get to the recaps… Continue reading

Blood Red: Hooptober 6(66) – Week Six

blood red hooptober 2019 week six

And we have come to the end, an end so momentous they let me post it during the week and not on a Sunday…nothing to do with the fact I was late, I assure you.  Anyway, the end brought a lot of great stuff…really the perfect way to end this kind of thing.  Things like the surprisingly great latest from Rob Zombie, 3 From Hell.  And one of the best films I should have seen when it was released, the rape/revenge male skewering thriller Revenge.  And the bizarre and gorgeous and slightly bonkers The Wailing.  Not to mention the solid Argento giallo Four Flies on Grey Velvet and the ultimate Karloff redemption after the dismal The Invisible Ray with the Val Lewton-produced Bedlam.

Oh, there was also the requisite Hooper film, but I got to cheat a bit so behold the Hooper/Carpenter collaboration Body Bags!

All that and I still have, in the next few days, films like Midsommar, Brightburn, and the newest iteration of Creepshow ready to go.  Enough talk – this year was a blast but it’s time to dive in! Continue reading
