Reviewing a new Iron Maiden album is always a bit of a balancing act. On one side, there’s the unbridled excitement over THE MAIN EVENT® that is, simply, new material from these legends of the metal genre. On the other, there’s the need to temper that excitement and judge that material fairly, with the understanding that, in most cases, the band’s best days are behind them. And while that may have made digging into the band’s latest effort, The Book of Souls, a bit of a process, the album’s got enough meat on its bones to pass the test.

CANTO: More Lemmy trouble, a Slipknot theme park, and more!
I am absolutely obsessed with the new Mgla album. Holy crap is it impressive.
- There’s no way we can’t start on this first. Lemmy had to cancel another Motorhead show, this time in Austin, after three songs due to health issues. There are videos out there of the incident and they are absolutely heart breaking. To follow up, tonight’s San Antonio show has also been canceled.
- In a bit of light news, Slipknot has announced their plans for a horror theme park this coming October. It will be held in Sacramento and should be fairly fucked up. Which is cool.
- Well, the cause of Bruce Dickinson‘s cancer has been revealed. And it might not be what you would expect. I’ll leave it at that.
- I know there are Soulfly fans out there. For them, I’m happy to report that the band will be embarking on a brief tour with Crowbar.
- I wasn’t the biggest fan of the first Batmetal video that dropped. But this new one, which covers “Murmaider”, is quite fun.
So many gems, so little time.

CANTO: Acoustic Ghost footage is awesome, The Sword’s massive fall tour, and more!
All told, it really does feel like this week is going by quickly. I’m not complaining. Here’s some stuff for ya!
- I like starting this with tours, so let’s do that again. The Sword has announced a massive 50-date tour in North America. They’ll be joined by Kadavar and All Them Witches the first month or so before Royal Thunder steps in the rest of the way.
- We all know that Bruce Dickinson likes his planes. Apparently he likes selling them, too. The Iron Maiden singer will be selling jets through retail-giant Harrods in London. I’m all set, thanks. Because poor.
- Is anybody voting for Rick Perry? Is anybody voting at all? Well, if you answered ‘yes’ to both of those questions, here’s a reason to change your mind. When asked what his favorite Metallica record is, the Republican claimed he had never heard of the band. Are you serious? Are you completely oblivious to to pop culture? I find that absolutely impossible.
- For those that can’t wait until Friday to check out Battlecross’ upcoming Rise to Power, you’re in luck. The album can now be streamed in full. Neat. Or something.
- Some live footage of Ghost‘s acoustic performance in Seattle has surfaced, and I gotta say, this looks like it was a ton of fun. Take a look…
Not to mention Papa Emeritus III seems super charismatic. I approve.

CANTO: Abbath announces a tour with Behemoth and Bruce Dickinson is still a badass
Hey everybody, this week is already full of crap, so let’s not waste any more time.
- So here’s some good news. Abbath has announced his full lineup and an upcoming European tour (with Behemoth!!!)… Get this shit to the United States, already.
- In terms of bad-assery, it’s tough to compete with Bruce Dickinson. In his more recent acts of aforementioned adjectives, he successfully completely an emergency landing of his plane when he ran low of fuel. God damn.
- Ghost are hitting the road in a peculiar way. Five dates this month will feature them performing in-store acoustic sets. Come again?
- Ya know, based on recent trends, I’m actually fairly excited for Children of Bodom‘s I Worship Chaos. The title track of the October 2nd release is certainly no reason for that to change.
- Finally, since I’ll be writing about this later, why not look into Fear Factory‘s new video for “Dielectric” off the fresh Genexus:
Nothing to not appreciate there. I don’t think.

CANTO: Great news for Bruce Dickinson, “meh” news from Lamb of God, and more!
Hey, guys, remember Quickies? Gosh, those were fun, weren’t they? Well, good news: we’re still doing them, only now they’re called “Canto.” (Gotta keep up with the whole Dante / Nine Circles of Hell theme!)
For all intents and purposes, though, it’s the same idea—so let’s not waste any more time on an intro. Here’s what we missed in the metal world today:
- Leading off with easily the best news of the day: Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson is officially cancer-free! As you might expect, the band’s holding off on touring until 2016 to allow him time to fully recover. Up the damn Irons!
- After what’s felt like months’ worth of rumblings about their progress on a new album, Lamb of God are streaming a new song, “Still Echoes,” on their website. My thoughts? “Meh.” The new album, VII: Sturm und Drang, is due in July.
- Blues guitar legend B.B. King passed away yesterday at 89, and while he was wasn’t remotely metal, a number of folks from the heavier side of the spectrum took to the internet to pay their respects. Nice to see. (And, of course, R.I.P.)
- Good news if you like power metal: Kamelot debuted in the top 40 with their new album, Haven! I haven’t even listened to this band since Roy Khan left—are they still any good?
- And finally, Primitive Man released a ridiculously NSFW video for “Loathe.” It’s all kind of messed up. If you’re a brave soul, check it out:

These guys at MDF next week will certainly be something. Anyway, that’ll do it for now. Enjoy the weekend!
Keep it heavy,
