Something about summer. I always find my tastes changing a bit during the hot months, and layer on month four of working from home, never going to stores or seeing friends, and I find myself less and less drawn to the depressing and soul crushing metal that is normally my utter jam. So this month it’s a little more upbeat, a little more positive, a little more energetic, and of course, angry. Because there’s still so so much to be angry about.
Anyway, welcome to June.
ACAB. Black Lives Matter. Transphobes can DIAF.
What, you don’t come here for the politics? Too fuckin’ bad. This is my house. Two things make me happy: people in the streets, and music. I can’t be in the streets due to health reasons, but I can sure as shit find and share music. So that’s what I’m doing.
Why link those two things together? Because tomorrow Bandcamp is donating 100% of their cut to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. So go buy some tunes. Buy lots of tunes. Because if there’s one thing I know, it’s that cops are throwing Black people in jail during these protests, and they’re going to need lawyers. So make with the buying.
I have lost all track of time. It moves both fast and slow, leaving me confused about both the day of the week and the month. It’s still cold out where I am, yet it’s mid-May? Another thing that has caused me to lose track of time is April’s ridiculously stacked set of releases, which I’ve turned into a playlist that slaps and grooves and causes time to simply disappear. It’s a real banger, so I hope you are ready.
How are you all holding up? Is the isolation driving you crazy? Do you miss your friends and family? Are you tired of joggers not maintaining social distance? Regardless, I hope you and yours are well during what can only be described as the biggest event any of us will ever live through. And I do hope we live through it. But enough about what’s happening outside, you are here to have some metal drilled directly into your ear holes! So to the point! Continue reading
Well friends, this may be it, with nothing to do but sit at home and listen to tunes while the world dies around us. So for the three of you (or less) who actually listens to these: I salute you, and deliver unto you the soundtrack to our apocalypse. Not much else to say, I just hope there’s still people to write for next month.
Ambient synth and soundscapes from Unreqvited’s latest EP starts us off, and leads seamlessly into Jaern’s stoner doom. Then we crank it up with some excellent tech death courtesy of Xenobiotic, which flows into the intense blackened melodic death of KVAEN. Sons of a Wanted Man follow with wonderful blackgaze chased by the experimental synths and sludgy black metal of Tombs. Speeding it up, we have riffy prog from the new Intronaut, and then we wrap with a couple of atmoblack tracks from Skyforest and Cult of Fire respectively. Continue reading
