Situated south of Colombia on the doorstep of the Amazon Jungle lies Peru, the birthplace of Morbid Slaughter. Formed in 2009, they have a handful of demos, an EP and now, their full length debut, A Filthy Orgy of Horror and Death. Morbid Slaughter are ready to get foul with the world. This trio mixes some of the best aspects of early black metal and punk—when punk was still considered dangerous.
First, a truth: when I saw “Fuck Off (We Murder)” on the track list it was the first song I listened to. In case you don’t know, GG Allin and The Murder Junkies did this song back in 1993 and it’s been a longtime favorite. I was hesitant but these guys ripped through it with a rock-n-roll heart splattered onto a punk brain. The raspy black metal style of Envenom’s vocals give it an evil feeling and channels GG pretty well.
The majority of the album is consistent in style with the exception of “Zombie Splatter Axe” and “Death Cold Blood.” The former slows the speed just a little and settles into dirty rock riffs paired with some catchy drumming. The latter sees the band slow it down even more and jam a simple chord progression over and over accompanied by a searing solo. The raspy vocals are obviously slower and more cumbersome here but still retain their aggressive nature.
Speed is where Morbid Slaughter excels and there are no better examples than “Chainsaw Blade” or “Torture”. Just as the song titles suggest, these tracks are ultra speedy ass kickers. Further, the punk aspect takes a backseat to the old school Venom style of black metal. Aggressive and loud with buzz saw guitar playing and blast beats galore however, these tracks contain one of my few complaints. For this style the kick drum is a tad loud and overtakes the guitar and bass at times. In the scheme of things it’s a small complaint in an otherwise beastly album.
Morbid Slaughter have put together an effort that conjures the best of the past and brings it to the here and now. They are not scared to rock-and-roll or grow a mohawk and paint it red with bloody entrails. Even though I would have loved to sit through hours more of this, it’s the perfect length at just over 28 minutes long. Just long enough to slice and dice your eardrums but not too long as to overstay its welcome.
