Receiving the Evcharist is our weekly feature where we pair choice albums with our favorite libations. Drink from the cup of heresy. This week’s offering: Entheogen’s Without Veil, Nor Self and Golden Road Brewery’s 329 Days of Sun.
The Metal: Entheogen’s Without Veil, Nor Self
Entheogen’s debut album, Without Veil, Nor Self is a daunting work to say the least. I first attempted to listen to this album closer to its digital release date, but found it so overwhelming while in the mindset I was in (anxiety is a motherfucker) that I had to turn it off. Now that I’m giving it another try, I can appreciate some of the more subtle textures woven in here without losing my mind at just how much seems to be happening at once. Driven by frantic drumming and swirling, echoing guitars, Without Veil, Nor Self is all the hallmarks of the modern black metal sound turned up to eleven, yet even amidst the chaos there are moments of structured riffing and melodic undertones that serve to anchor the listener before things get too cerebral. And can we please give it up one more time for Jack Blackburn behind the drum kit? Because this is one of the most insane drum performances I’ve heard in a long time.
The Booze: Golden Road Brewery’s 329 Days of Sun
It may seem odd to pair an album as dark as Without Veil, Nor Self with something as bright as Golden Road’s 329 Days of Sun lager, but I’m never one to turn down free beer, so why not use it? Plus, I’ve been on an uncharacteristic lighter beer kick of late, which has opened me up to a lot of good beers that I would have otherwise shrugged off. 329 Days of Sun embodies the bright nature of its home of Los Angeles, with a subtle kiss of citrus and hop to balance out the sweet and smooth lager base. When I imagine a beer that would taste “refreshing,” I imagine it would taste exactly like this.
Our second full week of 2018 is already done. Hopefully we’ve all made it through intact. Celebrate the weekend and brace yourself for what’s to come. I’ll see you next week.
Cheers, and be good to each other,
