Dark Tranquillity is one of the longest-standing, Gothenburg-based death metal bands still active. More impressively, they’ve never come and gone over that span of time; their releases and tours have been consistent, with no need for a break or extended absence in any form. Officially formed in 1989, they still come up frequently in my playlists – especially recently, thanks to a mighty impressive performance with Insomnium a few weeks back. Over those 25 years, they have released 10 full-length albums, but there are very few that I go back to more than CharacterAs it so happens, this particular album turned ten years old(!) this past weekend. What an ideal time for a #tbt!

Released January 24th, 2005, on Century Media RecordsCharacter has managed to remain a timeless listen. Of course, everyone is familiar with “Lost to Apathy,” the most popular—and, arguably, the most impressive—track on the record. But there are so many memorable moments to be found in the likes of “Out of Nothing”, “Mind Matters”, and “Senses Tied,” to name a select few. From start to finish, it’s an extremely consistent listen from a quality and production standpoint. It’s clean, crisp, and has a bit of a darker feel than the preceding Damage Done (which, to be fair, is itself another one of my favorites).

Overall, a very solid listen. But I’m done using words for now. I could go on about this album for some time. So instead, here’s the music video for the aforementioned “Lost to Apathy”:

I now invite you all to join me in saying “Happy Birthday” to Character by listening to the album in full. It’s always worth it.
