nightfell the living ever mourn

With Nightfell‘s new album, Darkness Evermore, on the horizon, I thought it was high-time we travel back to February 2014 and revisit their first LP, The Living Ever Mourn. The album quickly rocketed into my top five albums of the year — and probably yours, as well. Nightfell are no slouches; between them, Todd Burdette and Tim Call have also done time in Tragedy, His Hero is Gone, Saturnia Temple and many others. They have all the pedigree in the world, and on this debut, they delivered beyond anyone’s wildest expectations.

In Nightfell, Burdette and Call create a hybrid of Crusty punk, black metal and blackened death metal that calls to mind a post-apocalyptic landscape. With The Living Ever Mourn, Nightfell painted a sorrowful picture of those end times and engulfed the listener in their journey. Tracks like “Empty Prayers” and “Funeral Dirge” are simply masterpieces in composition as they ebb and flow with pulsing aggressiveness and beautiful decay.

If you haven’t heard Nightfell, take this opportunity to do so, as Darkness Evermore will be out in three short weeks and will surely make swells throughout the metal and punk communities. Now let’s hope they follow through on those plans for a U.S. tour…
