If you’ve seen David Simon’s series Tremé, which tells the story of post-Katrina New Orleans and the musicians and artists who make New Orleans what it is, then you’re probably familiar with trumpeter and pianist Terence Blanchard. He also played with Lionel Hampton, Art Blakey, Donald Harrison and fellow Louisianan Branford Marsalis. So there’s no lack of pedigree. Of late, Blanchard has been scoring Broadway musicals and films as well as working as a bandleader. It’s the latter skill that Blanchard has brought to Blue Note Records releasing a few solo albums under the historic label. And on his new album, Breathless, Blanchard combines funk, soul, R&B, hip hop, beat poetry and jazz to create a brilliantly fluid and groovy album.
Not to be outshined, The E-Collective is comprised of award winning Cuban pianist Fabian Almazan, Charles Altura (who recently gained notoriety playing with Chick Corea), New Orleans workhorse Donald Ramsey on fretless bass and the always groovy Oscar Seaton on drums. Together, with that addition of multi-dimensional vocalist PJ Morton (also heavily featured) the band lays down some of the most consistently groovy, post-bop fusion on the globe. Take “Soldier” where Altura’s guitar shines over the funk-laced rhythms and Blanchard’s distinctively brassy, staccato trumpet playing. Or the title track with its spoken word and slow break-beat style. The compositions on Breathless are evocatively groovy.
Now so accustomed to successfully scoring films and plays, Blanchard’s composition on Breathless reveals a touch for mood. Whether it’s the burning R&B of the opener “Compared to What” or the expansive, decaying landscape of “Everglades,” Blanchard evokes a range of emotions across Breathless. Thematically, social politics, a sense of self and self-reflection are transmitted by way of vocals and instrumentation.
At age 53 Blanchard is combining all of his experiences in the music industry, including his heavy and diverse work in films, to create a unique blend of styles and talent. Breathless is truly a master work in the catalog of what is sure to be a jazz legend. And with no signs of relenting expect Blanchard’s name to pop up in unexpected places in the future.
