We here at Nine Circles have been inspired by a number of writers. In the near future, we will start doing writer profiles for some of them, for it was those writers that inspired us to join, and water down, their craft. With that in mind, we asked a preliminary question to a bunch of writers we intend to profile. First up is none other than the always lovely Seth Werkheiser!

“You’re a metal writer. And if you’re receiving this question in your inbox, then you are a good metal writer. As such, people probably assume that you spend your whole day (and night because metalheads never sleep) blasting your ear drums with the sweet sounds of blast beats. But we know that’s not true. So what are you listening to that isn’t metal these days?”

Seth Werkheiser (@sethw), who gave the most comprehensive answer, thereby only reinforcing that Seth is one of the nicest, most generous, and outgoing human beings on the internet. He’s not only the founder and sole-proprietor of all things Skull Toaster (@skulltoaster) but his beard actually looks like black metal font. So, all-in-all, Seth is cool. Way cooler than me or you for that matter.

7. The Jezabels, ‘Dark Storm’ EP (2010) – Discovered via a RedBull bike video on YouTube, this EP was my soundtrack to quitting a job in NYC and biking all over the east coast and down south.

8. Faraquet, ‘The View from This Tower’ (2000) – Wasn’t a Dischord kid growing up, but stumbled up their lone LP and love it.

9. TRS-80, ‘Shake Hands with Danger’ (2003) – Slow and steady. Doom like, filled with repetitive electronic vibes yet with an analog feel.

10. Brandt Brauer Frick, ‘You Make Me Real’ (2010) – Discovered their song ‘Caffeine’ on YouTube, which sounds like beats made with a typewriter and plenty of beeps and boops.
