Great Murders in Black Metal History. Volume I
The year was 1993…
Black metal was really hitting its stride in the Norwegian scene. But more popularity meant more money and more money meant more conflict. It was on the Night of August 10, 1993 when Corn Flake lover and Black Metal Legend Vaarg Vikernes, murdered his bandmate and friend Øystein Aarseth, better known by his stage name Euronymous. Despite allegations of torture and an alleged desire of Euronymous to videotape the slow killing of Vikernes a la Saw, Saw II, Saw III, Saw IV, Saw V, Saw VI, and, presumably, the upcoming Saw VII, Vikernes was sentenced to 21 years in prison for the murder.
Despite the murder, that year saw the release of Mayhem’s groundbreaking De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas featuring Count Grischnackh (Vaarg Vikerens) on bass guitar and Euronymous (Øystein Aarseth) on guitars. To our knowledge this is the only album ever recorded where a murderer and his victim played together.
