Receiving the Evcharist is our weekly feature where we pair choice albums with our favorite libations. Drink from the cup of heresy. This week’s offering: Mammoth Grinder’s Cosmic Crypt and Drake’s Brewing Company’s Denogginizer.
The Metal: Mammoth Grinder’s Cosmic Crypt
Maybe its just my imagination, but I don’t remember Mammoth Grinder sounding this…beefy the last time I listened to them. Then again, this is almost a whole new Mammoth Grinder we’re dealing with. After five years of silence, main man Chris Ulsh resurrected the project, bringing on board two members of Iron Reagan to fill out the lineup, and delivered Cosmic Crypt unto the world at large, an album that manages to be the band’s heaviest and catchiest offering simultaneously. The production on the album accentuates the pounding drums and nasty riffs, making the trio sound absolutely huge, but even when heavy enough to crush you into a two-dimensional being, there are enough hooks present in these songs to have you humming them unintentionally to yourself for days at a time. Cosmic Crypt delivers on every level, be it atmosphere, riffs per square inch, or memorability; this is a crazy amount of fun to listen to.
The Booze: Drake’s Brewing Company’s Denogginizer
Tonight we welcome back the East Bay’s Drake’s Brewing Company. I was a big fan of their Drakonic stout, and when I saw something of theirs with a name as intriguing as Denogginizer, I knew I couldn’t pass it up. Denogginizer is an imperial IPA, and as is the case with imperial ales, there’s nothing subtle going on here. The hop flavor is big and in-your-face, full of bright west-coast flavors of aromatic pine and bitter citrus. The malt finish is super sweet, but necessary to counteract all those hops. To top it off, this brew sits at almost 10% ABV. Denogginizer is right; there’s enough going on here to take your head clean off, but you’re guaranteed to enjoy it.
Your faithful companion signs off once again. I’ll catch you next time. Until then, and as always,
Cheers, and be good to each other,
