Receiving the Evcharist: Ruin Lust and Brävery Brewing Company’s Blackberry DIPA

Receiving the Evcharist 2018

Receiving the Evcharist is our weekly feature where we pair choice albums with our favorite libations. Drink from the cup of heresy. This week’s offering: Ruin Lust’s City of Babel and Brävery Brewing Company’s Blackberry DIPA.

The Metal: Ruin Lust’s City of Babel

cover Ruin Lust - City Of Babel

I cannot lie, I’ve found myself growing increasingly tired of the more extreme blackened death metal I’ve heard of late. Maybe listening to all that screamo has done a number on me, or maybe it’s just the fact that, while we had a huge crop of bands in the last few years doing vastly interesting things with the sound, that seems to have fizzled out into a few bands content with color-by-numbers riffing. Thankfully, we have Ruin Lust back from the grave to set things right again. The band’s self-titled 2013 album released on Psychic Violence Records (now sadly on indefinite hiatus) has long stood as one of my high water marks for this substyle of music, and after breaking up around this album’s release, I thought it would be the last we’d hear of them. Never say never, however, because not only did Ruin Lust re-activate after six years of silence, but we now have City of Babel to contend with, the band’s SECOND full-length album in two years. Truly, my cup runneth over. And that cup is full of nasty, beefy riffs. Yet where Ruin Lust have always succeeded for me is in the way they inject atmosphere into their music rather than holding to an ‘All Grind All the Time’ formula. Whether its opener “Choir of Babel” or epic closer “Rite of Bending,” the moments of haunted melodicism or noisy atmospherics serve to keep City of Babel dynamic and interesting in ways their peers might do well to take notes on. 20 Buck Spin knows death metal, and scooping these lads up was a smart move.

The Booze: Brävery Brewing Company’s Blackberry DIPA

Bravery Brewing - Blackberry DIPA

Tonight we have something new on deck. I had never heard of Lancaster, CA’s Brävery Brewing Company until their wares appeared before me on a routine grocery shopping trip with flavors so outrageously up my alley I couldn’t help but grab a couple packs. Case in point: the brewery’s Spring special release, a blackberry double IPA. I am a fiend for anything blackberry so I knew I had to give this a shot and lord is this worth it. This is a strong double IPA with the Citra and Centennial hops making their presence known, but the sweet/tart hit of fruitiness at the end knocks back what would otherwise be an overwhelming drink, and the blackberry also serves to play up the citrus and melon notes from the hops. For something that could have gone too far in either direction, this is a surprisingly well balanced drink that is perfect for the beginnings of Spring. Check back next week for more from this brewery too…

Cheers, and be good to each other,
