Wasting no time and hitting the ground running, hardcore band BERENICE, is releasing their debut self-titled EP.  The band formed in early 2023 and started performing at local shows before heading into the studio to record.  Proving to be hard workers and even harder performers, BERENICE combines their sound with sludge, crust, and grind creating a uniquely ferocious energy.  Matching that energy with lyrics, these five tracks focus on hardships seen around their native land of Britain, raging against unnecessary greed, bringing attention to the disparity between affluence and poverty, and daily struggles faced by many.  The quintet is calling for change while also offering a catharsis.

The EP opens with “Problems,” giving crashing tones and cymbals before quickly bursting with blast beat drumming, distorted guitars, and screamed vocals.  The track eventually slows down a bit, introducing sludgier riffs before halting and moving into track “Reflection.”  Immediately feeling the urge to jump into a circle pit, the passion remains and takes on a quick marching tempo before revving up more and more as the track moves on bringing carefully calculated chaos.  “Torment”  brings catchy melodies and rises and falls giving some slower moments and death metal influence.  “Broken” showcases drumming and brings some vocal variety with melodic spoken word, urging listeners to take in the lyrics and message.  The wrath of BERENICE is especially felt here as amidst the aggression, there is a sternness that gives chills.  The EP ends with “Sorrow” which continues the intensity and eventually comes to a dramatic end with stretched out tones, punctuating drums and cymbals, and some final bursts and screams before everything drops.

Each track brings insanely high energy while also ending in quick and aggressive stops, dramatically placing a period at the end every time and giving listeners just seconds to breathe before jumping into the next.  Everything feels chaotic but is meticulously composed to emphasize the emotions of the EP.  The technical skill from each of the musicians in BERENICE is endlessly impressive and the hardcore punk attitude of the band is admirable.

BERENICE is already making their mark after being together for just a bit over a year, and it is easy to see why.  The seasoned musicians in the band are talented and passionate.  I am sure a live show would break every bone in my 30+ year old body and be totally worth it.  The band has plans to play live shows across the UK and I hope they ultimately embark on a broader tour.  I am eager to see what they create next, and I am sure the energy will not slow down and their music will continue to kick ass and call to action.
