wake up and smell satan

Since Ritual Grim, or Death, as we refer to him, was in such a good mood last week. We’ve decided to give him this Friday off. And by that I mean I have no idea where the Hell he is. He doesn’t even really exist. At least in the physical sense. Regardless, it is more than an honor to step in and share some sounds from the depths below this lovely Friday morning.

For a bit of context, the past few weeks have found me immersed in Nergal‘s biography, Confessions of a Heretic: The Sacred and the Profane, Behemoth and Beyond. Naturally, my interest in the themes presented in Behemoth‘s writings has once again peaked. Do I give a shit that it’s getting to the point where “Wake Up and Smell the Satan!” is morphing into a dumping ground for my Behemoth fandom? Of course not. I have long admired Nergal’s viewpoints and musical ability. And once you delve into the rejection of Christ and the acknowledgement of Satan, it’s perfectly fitting.

Anyway, today I’m sharing a track that was not released on any full length studio albums. Rather, there were a few gems on 2013’s Blow Your Trumpets Gabrial EP. I was fortunate enough to pick up a copy the last time I saw Behemoth, combined with 2014’s Xiądz. But aside from obviously featuring the single from The Satanist and a remake of the classic “Moonspell Rites” on the latter-mentioned extended play, a certain track titled “If I Were Cain” stands out. It’s a punishing display of rhythmic ferocity that is less complex than what was featured on The Satanist, yet contains the same sense of atmosphere as the rest of the album. A hidden gem that I only recently discovered. So, join me in the march to the funeral ov God…

Ascending in sectarian rapture
We are an oracle ov locust
Sanguine as yet anointed
We rave the pearly gates

Walk with me, Kaiafhat
Pilate, lead the way
I call upon Cains ov this world
We are marching to the funeral ov God

“Ein Bier… bitte.”
