How Not to Do It: “DIY PR”

OK, so this month I want to go over a few things that I have witnessed in the past few weeks that are major mistakes from bands who are attempting to promote themselves. I’ve probably gone over these in the past, but want to go over them again in the hopes that some more people read this and knock it off.

TAG RANDOM PEOPLE IN EVERY STATUS:

Recently on Facebook I was tagged in a status with 21 other people. The status had something on it about Lemmy dying. Now, I’m a Motörhead fan but this status had literally nothing to do with me. It was just a member of a band stating how much he liked Lemmy with no purpose other than to draw attention to the post. This happens far more frequently then you imagine and usually is an attempt to get people to click on their video or merch link.

And speaking of Lemmy…

DON’T USE A RECENT CLELEBRITY DEATH TO PLUG YOUR OWN BAND:

Now getting out there and saying about how a certain musican/celebrity influenced you is fine, but posting something like “X musican totally influenced me and will be missed” and then posting a link to your Bandcamp is just tacky. Double tacky points if you then sponsor the post on Facebook (I just saw someone do this today).

DON’T BE A DICK TO PUBLICISTS AND/OR JOURNALISTS:

Don’t get me wrong, you can ask me questions and you can talk to me. That is totally fine. But please don’t be that asshole that gets chatty with me and starts trying to pump me for info so you don’t have to pay me. This includes asking me for email contacts of journalists.

This also goes for dealing with journalists-Friend them, talk to them, buddy up with them on Twitter but don’t be “that guy” who only talks to them when you want something for your band. There is no harm in asking someone for favors but don’t add them on Facebook, ignore the person for a year and then suddenly pop up when your album is ready saying “Heyyy buuddy do you still write for/know anyone at _____ site? I really would love a review.” Also don’t be a creep and ask weird questions about the family.

That’s it for this month. I apologize if some of this was repeated from earlier posts but these were just things that were on my mind at the moment. If you have any questions or want to say something mean to me, you can talk to me on twitter @dewarpr or PM me through our Facebook page.
