Finnish doom trio Cardinals Folly have been making their sludgy racket since 2007. And with two full lenghts under their belt, along with two EP’s and a compilation appearance, the boys are ready to unleash their third LP Holocaust of Ecstasy & Freedom. That album will be released 6.3.2016 via Shadow King Records. You can grab the record off Bandcamp here or you can order a physical copy here. We had a chance to chat with Mikko of Cardinal’s Folly in advance of that release. Be sure to check out our very own Tenebrous Kate’s review here. So follow the jump for his answers!
How did you first get into playing music and have you achieved the level of success that you always hoped to achieve?
Well, I just began jamming with my acoustic guitar to some rock songs when I was about 12 or so. This is my first actual active band, and I started playing bass when I formed Cardinals Folly. I don´t know about success – we just want to create our own sinister art.
What’s the most you have ever debased yourself to get your band onto a show, into a magazine or otherwise promoted, covered, debased and praised?
We never do those – I actually think we´ve missed such opportunities because we said what we thought, instead of kissing any butts…. Plain and simple. Wouldn´t want it any other way… THAT would be embarrassing.
What do you see as some of the great things happening in metal and what are some of the worst things happening inside the scene right now?
Well, at least the underground is very active and there are lots of gigs and festival in Europe & US. I´m sure the worst things are too multiple to be mentioned all here, everything from lameass bullshit being called metal, to all these rip-off incidents.
It seems that now everyone has a passion for some cause and that those people are very open about displaying their passions. This is probably a very, very good (and progressive) thing socially. What are some of the most important issues (social/political/humorous/etc.) for you and how do you insert those issues into your music? (This question is especially appropriate for you since your music is quite an outlet for your physical and emotional pains).
I have a passion for topics such as history, dark sides of man, occultism, left hand path and different kinds of mysticism, literature, horror movies etc… in CARDINALS FOLLY, my goal is to serve these passions as best as possible. It´s not my own pain, I´m channeling the mystical atmospheres from these dimensions, be it painful or not. I take what comes. Inspiration must lead.
What, or who, got you into metal and how old were you? How did your family take the news?
Well, maybe like 13 years old when I found bands like Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath. Finland is a pagan country: nobody is that religious here, so nobody gives a fuck, as long as you handle your shit.
What’s the stickiest you have ever been?
I´m always sticky. And sleazy. Maybe I don´t understand the question? Anyhow, it reminded me of something. Once I masturbated at the car of my mistress, during a drive in the US. It was in Miami, right on the ocean drive to the beach. Luckily I was on a horny mood for days, so there wasn´t that much. If you know what I mean.
What advice do you have for aspiring music critics and outlets out there? How can we all better serve the genre in the eyes of a hard-working musician?
Do your homework. Know your stuff. Exploit people in interesting ways. And bands too. And if you really don´t know what to even write, let someone else do it. 50% of the reviews out there are written by guys who couldn´t tell AC/DC from Black Metal. Sad but true.
What’s your goal? You guys thinking world domination? Maybe saving a continent? Maybe invading one? Any interest in starting a cult? Do you guys have day jobs or hobbies you want to share? Whatever it is, please let us know.
The world has got out of hand – it can´t be dominated. It will grow like a weed from hell now – uncontrollably. But that adds possibilities for you. A cult we already formed, this is it baybeh! My day job is with books, and luckily so. Also, my hobbies can pretty much be found from the lyrics I write for my band. Haa haa! But you could say that we are trying to save DOOM METAL – we wanna make it, or should we say keep it, dangerous and exciting…. Not any more predictable or one-dimensional than classic metal is in general! Speed kills in doom too — sometimes!!!! We wanna be the Bathory of Doom Metal. The only band that really plays METAL in doom context. Not some psychedelic stoner fusion blah blah blah. It´s too damn safe, predictable, temporary and one-dimensional, and that doesn´t qualify as dangerous music. We all know that, deep in our hearts. You need REAL RIFFS!!! And melodies. And harmonies. Messing around with tempos. Solemn groove. METAL!
Finally, when you’re not listening to, writing or playing metal, what are some of your favorite albums to listen to currently?
Outside metal music, my all-time favorites are stuff like Blondie, Depeche Mode, Miami Nights 1984, Joy Division, KISS, Bauhaus, ZZ Top, Basil Poledouris, Sabrina Salerno, KMFDM, The Doors, Der Blutharsch, Death in June, Rome, Classic horror movie soundtracks in general… I find it easier to mention artists I like, not albums…
Thanks to Mikko for his time. Be sure to check out Cardinals Folly here.
