Cemetery Lust - Screams Of The Violated

Today we have a twofer of metal reissues, more bang for your metal reading. The first is a reissue of Screams of the Violated, the first full-length from Portland Oregon thrashers Cemetery Lust. The second is more of an unearthing, rather than a reissue, of the EP Ancient Wrath from the now defunct Greek death metal band, Necromancy. Two strikingly different albums from different eras of metal. We’ll go over them separately. First up: Cemetery Lust.

Cemetery Lust released their debut, Screams of the Violated, in 2012 with an extremely limited run on Headsplit Records. The band plays a ripping mixture of early Kreator and Slayer with a hefty dose of death metal thrown in. Cemetery Lust pulls off speed, thrash, and groove without sounding like a crappy rehash. Case in point: “Throw The Switch” starts with a thrashy, almost skate punk cadence, which speeds up even faster through the bridge. Then they finish the song with a one-two punch of slower death metal followed by pure speed. The vocals are a typical mix of yelling and barking but with a kind of “in your face” assault.

Personal favorite, “Black Angels of Hell”, gets off to a slow start but once the speed arrives it’s head and shoulders faster than anything on the album. Of particular note here is in the midst of the speed are some high flying solos from Seth Traver. “Possessed Confessions” does a good job of giving us an updated Possessed sound yet still somehow manages to not go the carbon copy route. For an album that wears its influences on its sleeve, these guys know how to make it sound new and exciting.

Screams Of The Violated is a really good combination of frenetic speed, crunchy death metal and dirty sounding thrash. An extremely fun ride that’s over way too quick. Necromancy will be coming to you a little later today.
