Receiving the Evcharist is our weekly feature where we pair choice albums with our favorite libations. Drink from the cup of heresy. This week’s offering: DSKNT’s PhSPHR Entropy and Anchor Brewing Company’s Coffee Porter.
The Metal: DSKNT’s PhSPHR Entropy
Not much is known about the person or people behind DSKNT, although if rumor holds true the main conspirator has ties to Antiversum, whose latest album I thought very highly of. That alone was enough to pique my interest in this project, but when diving into the music itself, I found an album worthy enough to stand apart and above its speculated musical connections. DSKNT’s music is the exact kind of modern black metal I can’t get enough of: heady in thematic concept, muscular in its execution, with enough dissonance to create a swirling maelstrom of unsettling energy. Songs like “S.O.P.O.R.,” “Resurgence of Primordial Void Aperture” and the album-closing title track surge forward with venomous intent, hitting hard and fast without mercy. Its an experience, an album that wholly engulfs the listener, and you’ll want to go down this rabbit hole again and again.
The Booze: Anchor Brewing Company’s Coffee Porter
Winter is my favorite time of year, in part because it means its coffee beer season. In addition to all the other lovely things that this time of year brings, I get to streamline my existence by ingesting two of my favorite beverages at the same time through the magic of Anchor Brewing Company’s Coffee Porter. The rich body and malty background of the porter makes the perfect canvas on which to display the deep flavor of local Four Barrel coffee. The coffee flavor here isn’t mild at all; this tastes and feels like breakfast at 8 PM, but I would prefer them to go big before going home. As it stands, the care and attention to detail highlight the best parts of the coffee and the beer, creating a drink with immense layers of flavor that reveal themselves more with each sip.
That wraps this week up. Just a few more to go before this year is over. Hang in there, and I’ll see you next time. Until then,
Cheers, and be good to each other,
– Vincent
