Receiving the Evcharist: Teratoma and Tree House Brewing Company

Receiving the Evcharist 2018

Well, after a bit of a hiatus due to some really good and some not-so-really good happenings, I’m back to share what music I’m consuming my alcohol with… or is it the other way around? It doesn’t matter. Anyway, I took some inspiration from the wonderful Mr. Voss and decided to dive into a previously unfamiliar band and album for this week’s adventure. And I have good news to share, everybody! Not only did the tunes kick ass, I had just the beverage to go with it…

The Tunes: Teratoma – Purulent Manifestations

In terms of what I look for in death metal, Purulent Manifestations checks all the boxes. The debut from Teratoma, the death metal collective out of Germany (by way of… a few places), is literally everything I wanted and more. It’s not just how filthy and raw this album is, even though it is very much that. It’s dark, it’s heavy, the leads are technical and the breakdowns are dense, but it’s the structural elements that Teratoma explore that really let this thing stand out. Effortless swaying between passages, solos, and breakdowns of varying complexities, both within each track and across them, show that Teratoma are onto something. Blackened death metal, with a touch of thrash and crust, is clearly a successful recipe. I must have cranked these six tracks a dozen times today, and it’s going to be at the top of my playlist as we slide into that weekend. It’s pretty fucking good, is what I’m saying. Anyway, that’s out now through Transylvanian Recordings, and you can give it a listen below. You can also name your price for the digital album, or you could be a cool kid like me and snag that slick red cassette. Just make sure you do one or the other.

The Booze: Tree House Brewing’s Catharsis

Someone tell me what could possibly go better with some gritty, raw death metal than a porter like this? Unless you’re completely unfamiliar with the beer scene on this side of the country, you’re probably aware that Tree House is a bit of a mecca. In recent weekend travels, I had to make a stop at the Charlton location to remind myself of how great an experience a visit is (something I do frequently, to be clear). Indoor/outdoor space, an unending draft list of some of the best beer you’ll find anywhere… of all styles, hiking trails, fire pits, food trucks… it’s the god damn best. This rich, dark porter is one of the best you’ll find anywhere. Equal parts dry and bold, yet sweet and chocolatey, it goes down way too easily for 7.4%. It’s like liquid dark chocolate that gets you drunk. So, it’s perfect! Not too dense, but you notice each sip enough to take your time working through a pour, letting yourself really appreciate everything it has to offer. And it has a lot to offer. It’s a perfect companion for a night filled with the exact form of death metal that makes feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

On that note, my friends, it’s about time we ring in the weekend. It’s been a truly weird stretch of time, but I always appreciate the opportunity to share some of what I consume from time to time. Give the beast of a demo from Teratoma a listen, crack something dark, and have yourself a party. Until next time!
